Meds: Please don't keep adding "over the counter" meds. Talk to you doctor and see if he/she is OK with what you are taking.

Taking more meds and supplements than are needed are not very expensive but more often not necessary.

Evaluation first: Before further medications or botanical/nutritional supplements, you need a fuller evaluation of your difficulty sleeping.  Many issues can interfere with sleep, and taking xanax (alprazolam) every night is not a long-term solution.  Please talk with your doctor about your sleep issues more fully.  Consulting with a psychiatrist may be useful for you, and you may even need a sleep study to get the best help.

: All these supplements are supposed to induce relaxation and induce sleep, actions similar to those of xanax. Since supplements are not investigated by the FDA we physicians are reluctant to endorse them as we don't know if contaminants are present, don't know the ideal dose,don't know side effects, don't know how effective they really are. Your pharmacist may have more information for you.

Valerian xanax (alprazolam): Valerian is extremely weak compared to xanax (alprazolam). If you wean off your meds under doctor's advice, then you are safe. Xanax (alprazolam) is never to be taken on a daily basis as it rapidly causes dependence.

Xanax (alprazolam) not the best: Xanax (alprazolam) is commonly prescribed for anxiety, but it can cause anxiety if used more than occasionally. It can be addicting. Do not use xanax (alprazolam) if you've had drug/alcohol problems. Cognitive behavioral therapy is by far the best treatment for anxiety. Learn a relaxation skill like mindfulness. Of medications, "antidepressants" like zoloft or Celexa usually work well with few side effects.

: You are likely taking too many medications and supplements. Discuss with your local Dr. Alprazolam has a BLACK BOX warning you need to read. Go to Drugs.com and do medication interaction check.  I never recommend supplements of herbs. The often contain stuff you do not want: arsenic, mercury, licorice,  bat wings-what ever the maker wants to put in them. There is no regulation of supplements.

However, if anxiety is a problem, the cause of the problem is important -because when you know how something works and why,  you can dosomething about it. Work out what this is about in therapy and maybe you won't need the xanax (alprazolam).
