: That depends on the germ involved. Many antibiotics will kill several types of germs. One of the better ways to be more effective in treatment is by taking a urine sample &amp; finding which germ is there &amp; what abx kills it best. Some abx that are great at killing UTI germs will not kill germs that cause a STD urethritis.

UTI: Sometimes the kidney function can show a slight decline in to stage 1 when you have a kidney infection. Resolution of the infection can bring it back into the normal range. Antibiotics do not necessarily cure kidney function they only help the infection. Stay well hydrated and minimize use of anti-inflammatories over the counter. If the kidney function stays low then it may need further testing.

First thing's first: Good evening. The answer would be in the urine culture. When was your most recent urine culture done, and what were the results? Also, sometimes symptoms that might seem like  they are being caused by a urine infection may have a totally different cause (maybe not a urine infection at all). STD's can cause similar symptoms. So could inflammation or trauma.

Only if it's early: If you are just beginning to feel symptoms, you can try taking cranberry tablets plus vitamin c and a lot of water. And there are over the counter "anti-septics" like "cystex" which may help. But if your symptoms develop into a full blown infection, then you are past home-remedies, and you need to see a doctor for antibiotics.  If you wait too long, you risk a kidney infection.

i would advise you that there is little for uti's other than antibiotics.  I am sure you are hydrating well and taking cranberry juice already?

But, the sooner you get this treated the sooner you will feel better.

Thanks for asking!: If truly a simple, uncomplicated UTI (females)and have been placed on the appropriate antibiotic, 1-3 days of antibiotic will usually kill the bacteria though symptoms due to the inflammation may take longer. In men, 5-7 days of treatment more routine.
