Physician evaluation: When you a have a sprain, ligaments have been partially torn and the surrounding muscles remain weak and unbalanced, leading to continued ankle instability. Other reasons for continued pain and swelling include an undetected fracture, bone bruising or tendon tearing. Consider seeing a doctor for an x-ray and exam. Numbness is often from minor injury or swelling to the surrounding nerves.

Well, : Well, the first thing you need to do is find out what kind, and how bad an injury you have.  You can't have an effective or successful treatment without an accurate diagnosis.

If it's broken, you'll heal better and faster in a cast.  If it's just sprained... It depends.  Some "sprains" include a torn ligament, which takes much longer to heal than a simple sprain.

In the first 24 hours after the injury, apply ice, rest it, keep it elevated, and an ace wrap would help you.  If you feel remarkably better the next day, you probably had a minor sprain and you should be fine.  If your pain is worse the next day (or clearly, if you're unable to walk on it now), you need an x-ray, either at a podiatrist's or orthopedist's office, or at the er.

Are you 90% or 70%? How important is this game? Reinjury may increase the severity and cause you to be out for a longer period of time. Yes, taping or a brace would be recommended if attempting to play.  Think big picture.

Keep free &amp; elevate: Staying in a position for a prolonged period can cause a sprained ankle to feel stiff and aggravate pain. You can try keeping the ankle out from under the covers so it's not "restricted" or could try elevating it up on a couple pillows while sleeping - elevation also helps with relieving swelling and overall pain.

2nd severe ankle sprain on same ankle. wearing a boot day and night, using crutches, tried ice, ibuprofen. still having severe pain even when at rest?

Ankle pain: Have you had X-ray done?  Consultation with an orthopedist may be indicated, and MRI might be necessary to evaluate it further.
