Ankle swelling: It depends on the degree of severity of the ankle sprain (grade 1 > 3), and on the activity level of the pt (immobilization in a p/splint and crutches, or only wearing an ankle brace or support, and the age of the person (a young person heals faster than an older person). At minimum it could be 3 weeks, but the swelling could last for months (5-6 months) if appropriate tx is not properly rendered.

Ankle sprain: Ankle sprains come in severities like most injuries. The more severe ankle sprains take up to several months to recover ; swelling may be the last symptom to resolve. Minor sprains may only last a week with no swelling ever occurring. Make sure you have the correct diagnosis and a treatment plan from your doctor.

Many possibilities: Swelling may last a long time following a foot or ankle injury. An x-ray can show if there is an underlying fracture. You may have a soft tissue injury if it is just a sprain and may have damaged the muscle, tendon, or ligaments in the area. Have it evaluated by a professional and get the appropriate treatment.
