PPI is better: Over-the-counter proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec (omeprazole) or Nexium (esomeprazole) can protect the stomach from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Advil (ibuprofen)/Aleve (naproxen).  H2 blockers like Zantac (ranitidine)/Pepcid (famotidine) at double dose are less effective, &amp; protect only the duodenum, not the stomach. Antacids like Tums (calcium carbonate) are inadequate for this purpose.

Yes: Zantac (ranitidine) is a good drug to prevent acid reflux over time. It does not work immediately though. Tums are good for immediate relief of acid reflux but it does not help with long term prevention. Both are safe for use in pregnancy

GERD Reflux: Use of zantac (ranitidine) or Prilosec are fine during pregnancy. You may find better control of symptoms by routinely using these medications rather than waiting for symptoms to occur. If over the counter medications do not address your symptoms, there are also several reflux medications that can be prescribed as well.

suffers from chronic acid reflux.takes 6 tums a day- but it only relieves the issue for an hour. tried zantac (ranitidine) but didn't help much. get scoped?

DGL is used to: help with acid reflux and is safe.  If you take licorice that is not DGL, over time it can raise your blood pressure.  Please consult w/your doc.  Peace and good health.  You need to take a lot of it for DGL to be effective.

Yes: If you need to, but usually one or the other is all you need. If it is not working, make appointment with a gastroenterologist.

Tums (calcium carbonate) OK.: If you get symptoms that infrequently, Tums (calcium carbonate) would probably give you relief more quickly than the other options for heartburn.

Talk to the doctor: These questions should be addressed to the doctor doing the scope. Nonetheless, no Tums at least 12 hrs prior to the procedure.

can you take zantac (ranitidine) while taking uribel? i know it says not to take antacids like tums, mylanta as it will interfere.  how is zantac (ranitidine) different?

Absorption: Zantac (ranitidine) doesn't physically interfere with the absorption of tablets or pills whereas antacids can as they coat the stomach lining. This interference is most marked if you take tablets just before or soon after taking the antacid.

hi, so taking too many tums for heartburn is not good but also taking otc zantac (ranitidine) for periods longer than 14 days is not good. what other meds are safe?

The PPIs.: OTC medications like Prilosec or Prevacid (lansoprazole) are stronger than what you have been taking.  But the fact remains that if your symptoms are not relieved after a week or two of medication you need to see a doctor to confirm your diagnosis and see if any formal investigative testing may be needed.
