i have perioral dermatitis and i think it was because of the steroid cream that the doctor prescribed me. it is stinging pretty badly, does mupirocin work at all topically for perioral dermatitis?

If it's an infection: ...it might help.  Impetigo often occurs around the lips or mouth.  If it's an allergic reaction or irritation, then a mild cortisone cream might help.   If it's a cold sore, an antiviral like acyclovir might work.  Perioral rashes or sores can be caused by vitamin deficiency but, if you  have a healthy diet, that's unlikely.  Hope this helps. No: Cause for perioral dermatitis is still obscure..  It may clear up by itself in months or years.  Application of topical antibiotics, e.g., erythromycin ointment helps healing.

Perioral acne: stop using the antifungal/steroid combination
 unless you have seborrheac dermatitis it may cause the perioral acne to recur. Just use the metrogel alone and see if it clears up. Some cases need oral antibiotics. followup with your dr if it doesnt clear up.

Yes: Smear some clear Vaseline just around your skin adjacent to your mouth. It's called a barrier dressing. Just like when kids lick their lips and develop perleche. You have your skin, grease, and the irritant. Too bad for you that you won't be able to easily enjoy all of those delicious curries for a while. You can get tubes of petrolatum to carry in your purse.

Perioral dermatitis : I would recommend oral antibiotics like doxycycline for perioral dermatitis.  The condition usuallly resolves with treatment.  Be aware of mouth irritants that could be causing the problem like new toothpaste, mouthwash, lipstick or foundation.

(strong topical steroids should never be applied to the face.) the Fluoride in toothpaste is sometimes blamed, but i think it is rarely (if ever) the cause.

Perioral dermatitis: Perioral dermatitis is a relative of rosacea. It occurs most commonly around the mouth, but can also be around the nose or eyes as well. Because it can be dry or flaky, it is often treated as eczema with topical steroids or heavy moisturizers which make it worse. It is treated with oral antibiotics and topical rosacea medications. Please see your dermatologist.
