if you have late stage uterine cancer, can doctors see a mass on transvaginal ultrasound?

Accepted Answer

Not neccessarily: Transvaginal ultrasound does not evaluate the lymph nodes in the abdomen (iliac and paraaortic) nor the upper abdomen.  So if the cancer has spread to any of these places (or lungs), it will not be seen on transvaginal ultrasound.

Not technically: A transvaginal ultrasound is a great test to visualize the uterus and it can show a thickened uterine lining, which can be associated with endometrial cancer but not always as there are other causes of a thickened endometrial lining. The only way to accurately diagnose endometrial cancer is with an endometrial biopsy or a D&amp;C. An US alone cannot be used to diagnose endometrial cancer.

had transvaginal ultrasound. everything ok except of enlarged uterus and potentially growing fibroid (2cm).could doc misinterpret fibroid for cancer?

Follow up: It is unusual for cancer for your age ,but you should have follow up and if growing you should have biopsy.

CA125: CA125 is a tumor marker to screen/monitor ovarian cancer. If CA125 is normal, you may still have other types of cancers. CA125 does not screen for all cancers. CA125 can be elevated for over 10 things not related to cancer. Pap smear is a screening test for precancerous/cancerous lesions of the cervix. I would love to answer more but best to review with MD who ordered those test or Healthtap MD.

Tested for gene?: Have you been tested for the BRCA gene yet? Breast, ovarian and colon cancer are associated with that gene. Uterine cancer usually will show a thickness in the lining of the uterus (endometrium) on ultrasound or irregular bleeding. Keep seeing your MD for regular evaluations and good luck.

Sometimes.: An ultrasound can sometimes detect cancer in the uterus (or a tumor or mass).  But, typically a biopsy (usually and dilation and curettage, a d;c) is needed to get tissue for a diagnosis of cancer.

Indistinguishable: Some time they are the same so if the discharge is unusual and won't go away it best see your gyne.

No and yes: No. an optic nerve tumor unless gigantic will not affect hearing as the optic nerves are in the lower front of the brain, and the auditory nerves are located towards the sides and back of the brain. Uterine cancer can cause large amounts of vaginal bleeding.

Pretty much, but...: The usual type of uterine cancer - arising in the endometrium (inside lining of the uterus) - should be seen on ultrasound unless it's too small/early.
However, typical endometrial cancer usually presents with bleeding rather than these symptoms. If anything, those would be more symptoms of ovarian cancer or the unusual type of endometrial cancer (pap serous, clear cell). Best 2 discuss w your doc

2 opinions on estradiol cream for vaginal atrophy. gyne prescribed it 3x a week and said risk of uterine cancer very low. my physicians assistant at my gp said i must take oral progesterone with it or my endometrium will thicken. who is right?

: Gradual bloodstream levels of estrogen by strictly vaginal use of estrogen sources , and can cause proliferation of endometrial cells.  Long term use may be managed by your prescribing physician by occasional ultrasound imaging of the endometrial lining. If the lining is equal to one cm. in depth, a biopsy may be indicated.
