No and Yes: Saining will not go away with toothpaste and mouthwash. Must be removed by dental cleaning. Prophy jet can often remove the stain very effectively. Scaling has different purpose but may also remove the stain in many areas. Prophy jet blasts it away with fine particles and scaling scrapes it away with sharp instruments. After cleaning you can keep things clean with excellent hygiene. Good Luck.

I Remember: the day my father got the first Ultrasonic cleaner in his office. I grew up and practiced dentistry going on 52 years. I have never heard of anyone contracting any disease due to the water pipes in a dental office. Water is chlorinated to kill any germs, so as long as your dentist is sterilizing his tips, you are safe.

Should not: The reason why we have to scale is because of tartar build up. The tartar builds up at the gum line and causes breakdown of the tissue and bone. As the tissue breaks down recession occurs. As the the gums recede the root of the tooth becomes exposed. The root does not have the insulating enamel and is much more sensitive this is what you are feeling. Hopefully it will calm down over time.

Scaler tip water: Ultrasonic scaler tips have water flow mostly to cool the tip as the energy from ultrasonic action produces heat. Another benefit i from the water flow is to wash away debris and blood for better visibility. Nothing is injected into you or your bloodstream.

Asked the hygienist for the in office Fluoride application or even better, teeth desensitizer application of gluma (potassium oxalate) to help you reduce sensitivity in the areas of severe bone loss (usually lower anterior teeth).
