Calf muscles: The gastrocnemius and soleal muscles become the achilles' tendon at the myotendinous junction. If these muscles are tight you will feel it in the achilles' tendon. Stretching exercises are necessary to stretch both muscle groups consult either a podiatrist, physical therapist or your family doc for the appropriate stretches to do.

See below...: The diagnosis is clinical- depending on the range of motion and level of pain.  Causes are many from genetics, to inactivity to injury to biomechanics.  Treatment starts with aggressive stretching, possible physical therapy, and if it's a real problem, surgery.

Eccentric exercises: The best solution for tight hamstrings and Achilles are stretching and eccentric exercises. Eccentric exercises load and strengthen muscle as a muscle lengthens versus when it shortens. For the hamstring my favorite is the nordic exercise. For the Achilles my favorite is reverse toe raises (heel drops) on an elevated surface such as a stair or step.

Stretching program.: If you have already started a stretching program on your own and still have a problem formal physical therapy can often help . Some patient are unable to overcome this problem with therapy and may requiresurgery to loosen the muscle9s) or the tendon.

Depending o age: This may be normal, the part not walking with full pressure on foot.  To stretch achilles bend foot up toward leg until they resist and hold for about 10 seconds then repeat.  If the baby has tight achilles later they may need a per cutaneous tendon lengthening.

Requires examination: orthopedic exam and imaging as well as antiinflammatory therapy, You may have an Achilles tendon cyst which may require excision or aspiration. The calf pain is worrisome and I suggest a venous doppler ( ultrasound) of your left lower leg with comparison to the right leg.

: Chronic Achilles tendinitis can develop  into a chronic painful condition if not treated. You need a structured stretching and strengthening program.

i've been in a cast for a rupter achilles tendon repair and i keep getting a pins and needles feeling in my leg and foot... it also keeps swelling, get a tight feeling in the cast. what should i do?

See your Dr: See your Dr who applied the cast ASAP or your orthopedic surgeon. There is a chance that the swelling is causing nerve compression or lowered circulation. They might need to cut the cast off and re cast it. They should also look at why your leg is swelling so much.

Lack of stretch: If you are not stretching enough and then complicate the issue by trying to exercise by running, etc.  You will get a tight achilles.  When you overuse the achilles without a proper warmup the calf muscle will lose it's oxygen, creating occasional cramping and tightening.  Good luck.
