Inflammation: The bone around your tooth is inflammed. The bone still has nerves in it, wheras your tooth does not.

Many things: Most likely to be an infection or a fracture. In the upper jaw a sinus infection can also be suspected to be the cause. Clinical exam and radiographic evaluation is advised. See your dentist.

Multiple reasons: There are multiple possibilities... From a cracked tooth, to infection, to a dentist missing one canal... Return to your dentist and have them take an x-ray and diagnosis the cause of the pain.

Seek Help ASAP: Need to have swelling incised ; drained by your dentist, endodontist (rc specialist), oral surgeon or in emergency room. When these infections enter the fascia (the layer between the muscle and bone) it can spread fairly quickly ; may become life threatening. In the meantime, if u have ab prescribed by a doctor for this tooth, take them, ice the area, put an extra pillow, don't sleep on that side.

Bite/retreat??: Black = staining and the alloy casting through the tooth as it becomes more worn.

throbbing: 
1) unknown
2) if upper tooth = could be sinus related
3) root canal failure?? or unfound root
4) bite trauma (clenching/grinding)

Please have evaluated but I'd start with 600mg Ibuprofen to rule out #2, #4 above and then monitor.

I : I assume that your root canal is completed. It is not unusual to have some pain after completion of the treatment due to residual inflammation of the tissues around the root of the tooth. This can be managed with Motrin or advil (ibuprofen). I may also be present if there was an infection in the bone as a result of the death of the nerve. Another possibility is that, if a filling was place, it is in hyperocclusion and causing you to put too much pressure on the tooth. Finally, if there is a fracture in the tooth you could be experiencing discomfort. Contact the dentist who performed the procedure for evaluation and management.

1-2 days: The Amoxicillin can take 1-2 days before feeling the full effect.   After a procedure, you can get maximum swelling on day #3.   Ice your face down and contact your doctor.   Usually your symptoms should start resolving soon.

Continual throbbing suggests a root canal problem.
