Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) : The fact that Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) is extended release, does not mean that it is extended excretion. The medication clears  the system at the same rate that an acute release preparation would. The half-life is about 12 hours. 5 1/2 lives to clear. Essentially gone in 60 hours, figure 3 days to be safe.

Pristiq (desvenlafaxine): Coming off the Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) is likely a major factor. In my limited experience with pristiq- patients had a difficult time tapering down the dose. I would talk to your prescribing provider about the speed of your taper. Take care.

Talk w/your doctor: I'm assuming a physician (a psychiatrist?) prescribed your Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) for a particular reason, and i hope you have been followed for this regularly.  You want to be sure that your initial symptoms are long gone before changing anything about your medication.  I'd suggest discussing your wishes to stop your medicine with your doctor, and developing a  workable plan.  Please don't do this alone.

Meds : Pristiq or Desvenlafaxine is a Serotonin and norephinephrine re uptake inhibitor.  Zoloft or Sertraline is a serotonin re uptake inhibitor only.  Your doctor is switching you over in a fashion that you do not get too much SSRI in your system at one time. As long as you follow the plan you should not have troubles.

Talk to your doctor : You may need to restart the Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) and have a much slower taper off. Talk to your doctor about the symptoms you are experiencing.

Pristiq/weight: Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) is usually weight neutral.  Weight gain on this med is unusual.  Every psychiatrist had seen unusual side effects with meds.  If i see a patient with weight gain on pristiq, (desvenlafaxine) there are ways to deal with it such as transferring to another med or adding something that  facilitates weight loss.  Keep on mind it could be residual depression symptoms causing gain.  Talk to prescriber soon!
