is it normal to see the vallate papillae in a healthy tongue? is it normal they look like swollen red bumps? or is it an indication of something wrong when also having a white coated tongue?

Thrush: A swollen red tongue with a white coating sounds like thrush (yeast infection of the mouth and throat). This is very rare in an adult and is often a sign of another more serious health problem like HIV infection or uncontrolled diabetes. Please, please see your doctor to get checked out!

hi how can i differentiate between white coated tongue and oral thrush, i have a white coated on my back of tongue near vallate papillae no pain , no trouble swallowing but feeling like i am swallowing something its only on back of my tongue.? thx?

: If you're healthy with no predisposing conditions to thrush, have no discomfort and other parts of the mouth aren't involved, we would call it coating.

Fungus?: It's impossible to make a diagnosis based just on one sign. However, the majority of common white lesions of the tongue are fungal. It's usually "candidiasis, " or what you might call "thrush." that's not something that easily goes away by itself. You should see a dentist & get some medication. More importantly, your dentist needs to rule out other problems which are potentially dangerous. Get help.

(circum)vallate: Papillae are 7-12 dome-shaped structures arranged in a v at the back of the tongue. See image. Like other papillae (filiform & fungiform) they have taste buds on them & are involved in the sense of taste. As the image shows, they appear to have a wall surrounding the central structure; hence the name 'vallate'.

Tongue inflammation: Hi, that could be due to Acid reflux, Allergy causing posterior nasal discharge, eating and drinking hot food and drinks, eating spicy food, biting on tongue, Alcohol, smoking and  poor dental hygiene.

Don't Worry: Brian, as far as I know, everyone has circumvallate papillae on their tongues. These are larger round bumps on the tongue (near the throat)

Do not biopsy now: this part of your mouth and taste bud may have been burned or irritated.you may have a small Sand-like particle what we call a stone in the duct. you may have a viral infection or even a small area of healing and repair from trauma.many times this will repair on its own. I would wait one month before I was serious about a biopsy I think it will get better.

They don't: Circumvallate papillae are they large taste buds on the back of you tongue. They are a normal part of your tongue and do not go away. If they get inflamed and/or irritated they usually heal and go back to normal in 5-7 days.
