(circum)vallate: Papillae are 7-12 dome-shaped structures arranged in a v at the back of the tongue. See image. Like other papillae (filiform & fungiform) they have taste buds on them & are involved in the sense of taste. As the image shows, they appear to have a wall surrounding the central structure; hence the name 'vallate'.
