Yes: Depending on the level of difficulty in removing the teeth, the swelling may take awhile to go down.  Be sure to follow the surgeons instructions.  If you have any concerns, you need to contact their office.

jaw swelling before tooth extraction. had oral surgery size of golf ball on left side was told fluid buildup.  how do i reduce swelling?

Hot towel: It is common to have face swelling after tooth removal especially infected ones. Cold compression for the first day following the surgery and warm compression after 2 and 3 days of surgery is recommended to reduce the swelling. Painkiller like Motrin also will help because of anti-inflammatory effect.

i had a lower tooth extraction 4 days ago. my jaw has a bump and is swollen and so is my neck and extraction site is yellow and white. is that normal?

No it's not: You probably having or developing an infection,are you on antibiotics? 
You should see your dentist ASAP for cleaning and depridment of extraction site and prescribe the proper medications.

2 avenues: See Oral Surgeon to evaluate extraction site.  See ENT to evaluate sinus.  Sounds like infection, and that requires more than OTCs.

Not lock jaw: Lock jaw is a lay term for tetanus.  You do not get tetanus from a tooth extraction.  You can get infection of the tooth root or have a piece of infected retained root that can cause swelling of the surrounding soft tissues making it difficult to fully open your mouth.  This should not normally occur after a tooth extraction.  See your dentist.

Trigeminal neuraglia: You have what we call trigeminal neuraglia (tn)
have you tried taking Neurontin (gabapentin) 300mg or discussing other treatment  i.E complementary alternatives  medicines , (cam) with your neurologist .
I know tn  management is not an easy task.

Bone Infection: You are dealing with two specialists who should reach out to each other to help solve the cause of this infection. If it is from the extracted tooth, then a simple antibiotic should clear things up. If after a course of antibiotics your issues remain, then it's probably a cracked tooth since antibiotics will not fix a cracked tooth. This is a simplified explanation, hard to diagnose sight unseen.

Possible...: ...but not preferable. Swollen gingiva can be caused by infection or severe inflammation. It is usually best to have these issues under control before the extraction, but there are exceptions. See your dentist for further guidance.

Yes: A rare complication of wisdom tooth extraction is a fractured jaw. Another reason to have your wisdom teeth extracted by an oral surgeon.

i still can't fully extend jaw after wisdom tooth extraction, why is that?

Accepted Answer

Muscles: Likely still some inflammation in the muscles from the surgery. You can massage them carefully, soak them with mouthful of warm water inside followed by hot compresses outside. Can also take alleve or Ibuprofen to help with inflammation. Call your surgeon and report this and ask for special recommendations. Good luck.
