my 7 month old is severly stuffy and coughing what can i do to make him more comfortable ans breath easier?

Saline: Using salt water drops to the nose will help him to expel the excess mucus that he has in his nose.  I like for parents to put in a drop and swirl it around to loosen the mucus. Propping him to sleep may help. It is ok to give him herbal fruit tea (warm) to loosen mucus in his throat. I like the apple cinnamon and lemon zinger. Cold medications are not recommended by mouth in this age group.

my son is 3 weeks old and is stuffy and coughing it sounds like he can't even breath out of his nose.  i tried sucking it out but it hasn't helped:( ?

Environment: I would make sure my child did not have an infection.  Also, running a vaporizer makes a big difference in respiratory problems in children.

what is the best way to help a 8 month old with stuffy nose and cough?

Accepted Answer

Humidity: Use Normal Saline nose drops and then either wipe them off or use a bulb suction held outside the nostril to suck out the mucus. Do not put the bulb suction inside the nostril as it can damage the nasal mucus membrane and increase the stuffiness of nose.

Cold or allergies: It could just be a common cold, caused by a virus.  If symptoms last longer than 10 days, a bacterial sinus infection is possible.  Sneezing and congestion for longer than 10 days can also be due to allergic rhinitis ("hayfever," seasonal allergies).  If symptoms last longer than 10 days or high fever occurs, seeing a doctor is wise.

what are your thoughts on running a marathon with a cold?   this will be my first one and have trained really hard for the past 21 weeks.   race is this sunday i'm on day 7 of the cold stuffy nose and cough

See doctor...: See your doctor asap. Whether or not you can run a marathon in a few days will depend on the severity of your symptoms and whether or not they can be controlled sufficiently by sunday. For example, if you have only mild nasal congestion that may be treatable allowing you to run but if your oxygen level is low at rest, it may not be under adequate control by sunday to allow you to run. See doctor!

Possibilities...: If he has a fever, then it could be a sinus infection. If he doesn't have a fever, it could be allergies. It could also be a lot of other things. Definitely should see a doc for this.

Most likely a virus: It is cold and flu season and there are cold fronts moving about...Most illnesses are viral in nature. You can give elderberry or umcka. Vit d 400 iu a day will also be helpful and if things worsen, see your pediatrician.

Neither : Motrin nor tylenol (acetaminophen) have any decongestant or cough suppressant effect, talk to your pediatrician for their recommendation as to what would be best for your child and his symptoms.

See Doc re: Croup: When a child has a cough that has a "barking" quality, a doc should check them for an illness called Croup. A pediatrician should see your little guy today. Croup can have serious complications at times even requiring hospitalization. Since your child is young, he probably can't tell you how sick he really is. He should be assessed today and monitored closely. Rx treatment will help him get better

mom is having a surgery 2morrow n shes having a tiny bit of stuffy nose and cough, no fever. i'm worried she won't be honest about her symptoms to the surgeon, will they be able to tell even if she doesn't say? and is it a risk?

Inform doctor: If she is having respiratory problem, she will be at risk of life-threatening events under general anesthesia.  If she would not inform the surgeon, you will need to find a way to convey this information to the surgeon.  Although an exam often will detect the problem but it is not foolproof.
