can lower lymphocyte be caused by physical stress? my knee has been in pain and swollen. my lymphocyte level was low 12.3%. my absolute lymphocyte is normal though.what could that possibly indicate? i didnt know if my injury and levels were related

for at least 2 years my lymphocyte level has typically been just below the normal reference range. a hematologist conducted tests & said that i am simply a statistical anomaly. but i have a massively stressful lifestyle. could stress be a cause?

Probably meaningless: Percentages mean nothing apart from absolute numbers, and these fluctuate wildly, even fairly far from the "reference range" (which you shouldn't confuse with the "healthy range" -- it's arbitrarily set so that several percent of healthies fall outside at either end). I can raise my absolute neutrophil count to maybe 20, 000 by swimming for half an hour in cold water.

Lab results: Each lab provides normal-abnormal ranges  and they can really vary. Normal can be 15% on some tests or 40% on others. Discuss this w/ Dr who ordered tests. Yes: Both adrenaline and cortisol (two hormones that are released in larger amounts during stress) can elevate the WBC count.

Don't worry: The lymphocytes and neutrophils are signifying a possible bacterial infection your body could be fighting.   If your wbcs are normal it is probably sub-clinical. The alt of 70 should be watched, but this level can go up simply by taking a tylenol (acetaminophen) new generally don't worry until the level is > 2x max normal.

21wf has been tired for 4wks. lots of stress(graduation,searching for jobs moving to ny,looking for rentals etc)bt showed wbc 3.4(was 5.4 6 mos ago) neutrophils are 1405(were 3400 6 mos ago).the rest is wnl.baso and lymphocytes are bit lower.worried!

Low WBC: Your youth is on your side. Emotional stress leads to poor sleep and eating habits which can cause lowered metabolic responses. I talk to your doctor about repeating the test and adding more tests. Often blood counts rebound. Speak to your doctor

Chemical transmitter: Emotional stress, such as anger or anxiety, causes the release of chemical transmitters (called hormones if they travel through the blood, called neurotransmitters if they travel down a nerve fiber) which can increase muscle tone (including the tiny muscle fibers around arteries) or increase the likelihood of muscle fiber contraction... Both of which may lead to vasospasm and raynaud's symptoms.
