Blood clots : Are generally caused by inactivity or lack of movement. Swelling could contribute or increase risk. So can obesity, taking oral contraception, smoking and pregnancy. If you get up and walk around, keep the foot in motion this would decrease any risk. One could also wear anti embolism stockings.

I never really : Heard of anyone getting an MRI to check for blood clots. Usually a venous duplex ultrasound or even a d dimer blood test would be ordered to rule out a clot. The MRI would be ordered to assess for structural damage and could explain the swelling, having said that some swelling one month after an ankle sprain is not uncommon. Wear some type of compressive anklet while walking.

my father recently had a grade 3 ankle sprain. it hasn't gotten better. now he has little yellow bruises up and down both legs. sign of blood clot?

Likely not.: You intimate the "yellow bruises" are on both legs. Although possible, the likelihood of bilateral blood clots is not high, plus he only sprained one ankle.

Possibly: That significant an injury should be evaluated by a doctor and x rays should likely be taken. Stop smoking if you do not want to eventually pay a heavy price.

Swelling : Swelling of legs is caused by various reasons. 
Blood clots, sprains, varicose veins and venous insufficiency, kidney failure, anemia etc.

Sprain usually occurs after an injury. It occurs on one side only unless both ankles are injured. 
Once blood clot is ruled out, especially in pregnancy the most common reasons for swelling are: 
1. Because baby is pressing on the veins in pelvic area, the venous blood from the legs returning to heart is slowed down which in turn causes swelling in both legs. This can be treated with using compression stockings and elevating feet whenever there is a chance. Also avoiding salt can be helpful.  Unfortunately this can last through the rest of pregnancy and will improve after delivery.
 
2. The most important thing is to check with your doctor and make sure your blood pressure is good and that you are not spilling any protein in urine which is an effect from high blood pressure called preecclampsia. This when ignored can lead to harm to fetus and mother.

I would highly recommend that you should check with your baby doctor if you already have not.

what should i do for my foot ? was told i had a blood clot in my right foot due to a sprain but i fell over a month ago and never injured my foot.

Get it evaluated.: A blood clot (dvt / deep vein thrombosis) is not a common occurrence in the foot. Seek professional assistance regarding the “blood clot” if indeed that is the correct diagnosis.  More than likely though, it is just a bruise which may last week to months.

Calf pain: Blood clots, known as "deep venous thrombosis " or "dvt" can occur in the calf of the leg ( one of the most common sites). Dvt's are characterized by pain , swelling and localized tenderness. Most commonly they occur after surgery, trauma , or prolonged periods of immobility ( like a long airplane flight.

Yes: A blood clot in the leg for any reason is potentially life threatening. You need to be monitored and have anti coagulation medication asap.

Clot: There are many factors that cause clots including high blood pressure , blood disorders and others .  Frequently there is pain warmth and swelling with venous clots.  There is so much info on clots and their formation there isn't room here.  See your family doc if you suspect this .  You may be referred to a vascular specialist for more help.
