how can you sleep through loud noises?

Good question: I live near an airport and wear earplugs at night because I am sensitive to the noise. It helps to some degree. There are machines that produce white noise that may help or make your own (turn on a fan, listen to music). Make sure you are nice and relaxed before getting into bed. Take a bath, drink some sleepytime tea and try to take your focus away from the noise and count those sheep!

Get a sleep study: Snoring is annoying for sure, (and is recently linked to heart disease) but you may have a more serious condition called sleep apnea. Ask you md for a sleep study. It is very easy.  You may be a candidate for a CPAP machine or a dental device to improve your airflow.  Call your md for an appt and examination.

OSA: Obstructive sleep apnea.  You may have periods of no breathing and your oxygen level can drop into dangerous levels.  You need a sleep study to evaluate this correctly.

Typical causes are..: Snoring is serious and should be evaluated by a physician.
Various typical reasons could be: decreased airway space, enlarged tongue, uvula and/or tonsils. Plus many other causes.
Possibly an at home or facility sleep study needs to be performed to evaluate more thoroughly and determine if obstructive sleep apnea is present.

Meditation: Meditation can be very effective in helping one relax and sleep.  Close your eyes and take slow deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. "hyper-focus" on listening to the sounds of your breaths, visualizing the air molecules entering and leaving your lungs. Practice this daily (or more frequently if necessary) for improving mental clarity and decreasing stress.

Sleep stages: Everyone is a "light sleeper" in the early stages of sleep (like when a dad is watching tv with his eyes closed!). When entering stage 3 or 4, or rem (rapid eye movement), the conscious awareness of a normal sleeper is shut down--so only the "2nd-hand snoring" sufferers around you are aware of the snoring!

Yes: He may have nasal allergies, his adenoid or tonsils may be enlarged. He may be evaluated for obstructive sleep apnea. The first step will be to see his pediatrician and may be ear nose throat (ENT) physician

Is there a reason?: Snoring in your case may represent an issue with your uvula, at back of your mouth, and this anatomically could be rectified with a uvuloplasty procedure.  But one question does arise, and that is whether you do have sleep apnea associated, and it may take an overnite sleep study to sort out.
