Type of spine curve: There are multiple reasons for scoliosis &one is known as a congenital type which is when there is a deformity of the bones ( vertebra) of the spine that one is born with & leads to an early curvature of the spine.  Some don't need surgery & others do.  They tend to not respond to bracing & can be very progressive in terms of a rapidly worsening curve & may be associated with other medical issues.

No: Congenital scoliosis is not life threatening in isolation. However, if very severe, there can be neuromuscular restrictions and pain that worsen with time, often the reason people undergo surgery. With chronicity (many years), severe cases lead to restrictive lung disease that an shorten life if not treated.

can surgery be used to treat congenital scoliosis in children? my child was born with congenital scoliosis. can she have surgery to correct it, or does she have to wait until she's an adult?

Congenital : Congenital scoliosis is typically treated in childhood. This really depends on the underlying reason for the scoliosis, how old your child is, and the chances that the scoliosis can get worse.  Surgery is a corrective option for this and it sounds like you should have an evaluation by a pediatric spine surgeon to see if surgery is or will be necessary at some point to help correct this.  Pediatric spine surgeons typically practice in major cities at the university or affiliated hospitals.  A pediatric orthopedic surgeon in your local are can also be helpful.

i'v a 10 yrs. old daughter who has an s shape congenital scoliosis more than 45*, there was no noticable progress & no pain. what are the options?

Early and often care: Although there has been no progression yet, with your daughter at age 10 and either early in puberty or not even entering puberty yet, now is the time to be very aggressive about monitoring for changes and intervening early.  This is not a little 10 degree curve - she is already at 45, and you don't want much progression before you would get agressive with early therapies.  See spine doctor often!

Depends severity: Congenital scoliosis can progress like idiopathic scoliosis during periods of growth.Spinal surgery depends on severity of curve. Surgery would be indicated with congenital scoliosis other body systems affected. Cardiac, kidney, and bowel abnormalities have increased incidence with congenital scoliosis.

20years ago had l-4 spinal fusion for congenital scoliosis now as an adult uncontrollable pain. what do you recommend?

Work up: You need to see a spine specialist to get some tests done to see if you have adjacent levels degeneration. Usually pt  and injections  are  first course of treatment.

See ortho spine doc: You may need reconstructive or supportive surgery to prevent nerve damage if you have more than one vertebral body affected by the osteoarthritis. If this is a congenital issue an ortho spine doctor would give you the best advice on how to proceed safely

i have minimal scoliosis,dextro 5 & levo 7.what bothers me is my left rib sticking out & hurts when i lay on my side  & find it hard to breathe now.

Be seen: That degree of mild spinal curvature can not cause difficulty breathing; do, if you are having trouble breathing you should be seen immediately and it is likely from another source.

could my mild degenerative disk disease and levo scoliosis be causing a loss of feeling in urinating and bowel movements?

: It all depends where the disc problem is and if it is compressing/ affecting the nerves which give these symptoms. Pl see a neurologist soon. Good luck
