Most likely: a mandibular torus or benign bony expansion of the surface of the bone. These are frequently inherited. Usually no treatment is needed but they can be removed if they are becoming ulcerated due to surface trauma.

Normal post-op: Erythema (red nessof the tissue) is one of the normal cardinal signs of inflammation that occur after a procedure, such as an extraction. 
If pain, swelling or fever occur, consult the treating dentist.

Gum pain
Gum pain: You may have something lodged  underneath your gums causing the redness and the pain. Popcorn kernels or other hard pieces can get stuck under your gums.   This causes a localized infection with the redness, swelling and pain.  See a dentist to get this checked out and the  debris removed.

Periodontist: Gingivitis or peridontal pathology are usual causes of these symptoms. Has your dentist already advised you?  If so, consult A periodontist as he/she specializes in gum disorders.

Proper Technique: If you are snapping the floss downward between your teeth, you may be irritating the gum tissue or even pushing debris and bacteria into the sulcus. A gentle sawing motion to pass the floss through the contact, then pull the floss outward. When was your last professional cleaning? If more than six months ago, its time to call for an appointment.
