Gum...: Inflammation. Redness and soreness is indicative of inflammation. It sounds like a dental cleaning would be helpful.

Inflammation: Can't tell what it is from. You may have calculus in that area, or a periodontal pocket. If its been more than six months since your last dental check up and cleaning, it's time to call for an appointment.

Needs to be seen: Depending upon whether or not the gums are sore in just one area or generalized, will help determine the cause. If it's generalized, it's probably related to less than ideal oral hygiene & some form of gum inflammation, although a medical issue cannot be ruled out. If it's local, it might be some acute infection or inflammation from food impaction or calculus. You need to see your dentist to know.
