Back muscles : I have evaluated more than 20, 000 people with spinal complaints. There is no evaluation specific for the quadratus lumborum with regards to weakness or contractions. Hip /groin pain can be from psoas muscle dysfunction, arthritis of the hip, kidney problems, infections, abscesses of the psoas muscle, thigh muscle dysfunction, low back problems.  Sitting does affect the psoas muscle

No difference: Static slow stretching of the specific muscle group in necessary.  Consider 10 thirty second stretches of each musce group will work.

Needs Evaluation: See an ortho or sports medicine doc to find out. Sounds like a shoulder issue. A competent examination can determine a lot of what your issues are.

it seems that every time i complete significant   stretches of intense activity (days of cutting firewood, building houses, house painting on ladders, etc, i find that i do not lose weight. it appears that either i gain muscle tone or my appetite increases. at 6'1" and 292 pounds, male and pear-shaped , i am finding it difficult to lose weight.  i am 55. i was 265 pounds of lean, mean fightin machine in my 30's when i built my log house. comments?

Overweight : At 265 pounds someone is not lean, you may have a lot a muscle mass. Exercises can almost never out due to weight gain to excess calories. I had a 360-pound patient who did cardio for one hour 5 times a day for a year and lost no weight. I believe you need a dietician. Start by recording everything you eat . See your primary care doctor.

Costochondritis?: Inflammation of a rib, usually only on one side, that is increased by inspiration is treatable.  A pulled muscle should respond spontaneously.  So depending on how long its been bothering you, you should see your doctor and get evaluated and treated.

Neural Compression : Disc herniation means that the disc gel has moved from a sequestered space between the vertebra and into the spinal canal.  here it will crowd and compress either the spinal cord and/or nerves that flow out from the cord through the neuroformamin (holes to allow nerve passage) . Causing your symptoms. Often the gel resolves after a few weeks, and benefits from epidural steroid injections.
