i am 55, female. when i lie down on my right side at night, i feel a pulsing to my neck. it doesnt seem to match with my pulse but feels more like the muscle? chronic tight neck. 
no shortness of breath, or pain. disappears after falling asleep.

Pulsing at night: Not sure if you mean feel or hear a pulse?  If you have been a smoker or had high cholesterol or BP then ask your doctor to listen to your neck for a bruit in one of the blood vessels in your right neck area caused by atherosclerosis.  Find out if anyone in your family had every had fibromuscular dysplasia of any arteries.  Discuss with your team.

Try cold pack: To neck in evening and see if that helps soothe the discomfort. If not, switch to heat. If both fail, will need to see dr for rx muscle relaxant and/or pt assistance.

Usually: You have to remember that acupuncture is not magic. Usually neck and shoulder tightness and pain should improve with acupuncture over a short period of time if it's not related to a disc problem. One session usually will not completely fix the pain and tightness.

Get checked out: The question is why are you having the pain.  You need to be examined and your pain further evaluated to identify the cause so the appropriate treatment plan can be developed.  You should see your primary doc first and they can refer you to a specialist if needed.  If you have never been treated, it sounds like it is time.  Many of these problems respond well to physical therapy.

Heat and Posture: Muscles in the neck most commonly tighten from either poor posture (making them work harder to support your head), or from an injury to the neck (in which your muscles tighten up to provide support to the spine).  Improving your posture and ergonomics is the best way to prevent tight muscles, and warm compresses are a good modality to help muscles relax.  Then do gentle range of motion exercises.

Torticollis: If you have torticollis, the best treatment is muscle relaxants and antiinflammatory drugs. But at home, you may starte with non steroidal antiinflammatory drug and keeping your neck warm and adding gentle massages, see if it works ( it may take a long time without muscle relaxant to have effects).

Occipital neuralgia: The most common symptom is suboccipital pain radiating to the back of the head and occasionally down the back of the neck. Tenderness over the neck is common. During severe episodes, the pain may be felt in the retro-orbital, temporal areas, dizziness, vertigo and lightheadedness. 
Rec.: see an orofacial pain or pain management specialist.

Myalgia: can be from flu.. Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil should take care of the rest- if not improved within 1 week- see your physician.

Could be: Band like headaches could describe tension headache and neck pain can result from muscle tension. Examination to rule out any associated neurological or eye abnormality is prudent.
