45 yo f. could having pneumonia once when i was a child (8/9 yo) have caused 2 separate foci of pleural thickening right lower lobe seen on ct i just had done in feb? i also had mild covid this past nov. pcp is not concerned at this time?

: Anything is possible-there is really no way to say for sure the etiology of the pleural thickening. It certainly could be related to a prior infection-either pneumonia or Covid. It could also be due to an exposure of some type, like asbestos, for example. If the areas involved are small and you have no symptoms then following them over time to be sure these areas don’t get bigger would be prudent

Future evaluation: Nodules can be very common in the chest.  A lot of the decision of what to do with your nodule depends on your smoking history. If you have never smoked then the likelihood that this represents an early cancer is low. There is a national guideline in the United States for repeating a series of ct scans to ensure that the nodule does not grow.  Your doctor will plan this out with you.

: No, that is not how pleural thickening is described. Those questionable change involves the pulmonary parenchyma at the lung bases and it's difficult to interpret its significance because we do not have your medical history. You should discuss with the doctor who ordered the scan. Take care!

Pulmonary nodule: Interpreting chest xrays is partly art, partly science. It's not always certain whether a spot is calcified or not. Calcified spots often indicate an older lesion, perhap a healed infection -- but not always. With or without calcification, if this is a new xray finding, additional testing likely will be necessary. Keep working with your doctor.

If : If it is truly calcified, then it means you have nothing to worry about. A granuloma is an area of inflammation or low-grade infection.  Once the infection or inflammation has resolved, it sometimes leaves behind some calcium, which on a chest xray is very dense (white). Calcified granulomas are not uncommon, especially among people who live in certain parts of the country where granuloma-forming organisms are found.
