i am having laparoscopic cystectomy surgery, how long should i take off work?

Accepted Answer

Depends: I am not sure if you mean laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder) surgery or not. One to two weeks off work for laparoscopic surgery maybe appropriate, depending on what your work entails, and how vigorous your work is. Check with your surgeon for your own personal individual condition.

i'm getting laparoscopic cystectomy and hernia repair next monday. is ok to use afrin (oxymetazoline) this close to surgery? i have sleep apnea and am worried.

Accepted Answer

Absolutely yes.: Afrin &amp; generics (oxymetazoline) are safe to use before surgery. Afrin shrinks the blood vessels &amp; improves air flow thru the nasal passages; very little is absorbed into the blood stream.  However, if you stop using it,  your nasal congestion may be worse than it was before you started it. Consider using external nasal strips in place of Afrin @ bedtime.  They work just as well. should i trust a regular ob gyn to do a laparoscopic cystectomy on an 8.4 and 4 cm hypoechoic cystic lesion? or should i have a gynecologic oncologist do a laparatomy? both suspect endometriomas/endometriosis but have different surgery suggestions.

GYN oncologist: GYN oncologist always preferable since many complications reported after laparsocopic GYN procedures.  Bowel injuries and bleeding during cystectomy reported and often because of unexpected findings procedure has to be converted to an open one. This is especially true in the presence of endometriosis.

i'm a med student with previous pilonidal cystectomy 4 years ago. a new cyst has resurfaced with some ulceration and drainage. should i be worried?

Cyst: I would not necessarily worry but I'd would be worth letting someone have a look at it as proper drainage and antibiotics may stop you having an increasing problem

Swelling Pilonidal: Yes, but this could be an allergic effect to the antibiotics that were given to you after the cystectomy. Stop taking any medications that were given to you and call the doctor  and explain to him the symptoms. If you noticed any swelling of the lips or tongue any difficulty breathing or talking you should immediately go to the ER or call 911

is pregnancy possible after bilateral endometriosis surgery (laparoscopy cystectomy)?

Accepted Answer

Yes: As long as there are no other fertility problems, you should have a chance to conceive after removing bilateral endometriomas. If you do not get pregnant after 6 months of attempts, you may want to consider setting an infertility specialist for assistance.

Possible: The tube that was removed is not likely to ever be repaired.  The other tube on the other had may be put back together via a procedure called "tubal reanastamosis".  You can also get pregnant by undergoing in vitro fertilization.

See below.: There are various surgical options when it comes to pilonidal cyst excision. In all, the entire cyst is removed. The wound is either closed with sutures, or is left to heal on its own over time. All patients should be informed that the wound healing process is notoriously slow, and often incomplete. Close follow up is needed. Recurrences are not uncommon. Ultimately however, the disease is cured.

Educate yourself: This can be very serious, and you need to know exactly what is going on. Insist that the physicians explain the entire situation to you, so that you and later your child can make the best decisions.

hi, i had a surgery for pilonidal sonus second time, 15 days back. the wound is nice and clean because of daily dressing. what should i do to avoid its reccurence?

Clean and Dry: A complete resection of the pilonidal sinus should result in a cure from this problem. Keep your healing wound clean and dry. 

If you have hair in the area, then once you are completely healed, you can use a depilatory cream to remove all hair from the area.
