i have a swollen foliate papillae on the left side of my tongue and it is slightly pointed like a skin tag. it is flesh colored and not very painful. i removed part of the top part myself. should i be concerned?

my incisive papilla is very swollen and tender.  would this more likely be a cyst or an abscess?

Cysts/Two flavors: A pus producing mass may be covered with a cystic membrane, abscess.  A developmental mass may have the same covering. It is highly possible there has been trauma to the area. Crust of bread, heat are two common sources. Once the papilla is swollen it is easy to hit it with the lower teeth and perpetuate the swelling.

hi ive had a sore swollen incisive papilla for about 2 weeks now what is the cause of this, i do have a deep bite and my bottom teeth do catch the area often, should i be concerned at all?

Question ?: Your issue can be an infection, a blocked salivary duct, or a growth. More information would be needed to properly diagnose. Swellings under the tongue can become dangerous if they rapidly grow since they can push your tongue backwards, causing airway blockage. Please have your self evaluated at once.

Possible: The foliate papillae are located at a site where tongue cancer can occur.  However, this is nowhere near as common as a non-cancerous reason for swelling and inflammation.  See your dentist for evaluation.

Fungus?: It's impossible to make a diagnosis based just on one sign. However, the majority of common white lesions of the tongue are fungal. It's usually "candidiasis, " or what you might call "thrush." that's not something that easily goes away by itself. You should see a dentist & get some medication. More importantly, your dentist needs to rule out other problems which are potentially dangerous. Get help.

is it normal to see the vallate papillae in a healthy tongue? is it normal they look like swollen red bumps? or is it an indication of something wrong when also having a white coated tongue?

Thrush: A swollen red tongue with a white coating sounds like thrush (yeast infection of the mouth and throat). This is very rare in an adult and is often a sign of another more serious health problem like HIV infection or uncontrolled diabetes. Please, please see your doctor to get checked out!
