Osteomyelitis: Osteomyelitis of any bone including jaw bon (mandible) means a deep seated infection of that bone.  It requires prolonged use of IV antibiotics and failure to treat may result in serious consequences.

Jaw osteomyelitis : multiple causes. Some of the more common would be untreated dental or sinus infections. Also injury, injections or prior surgery to repair jaw may cause osteomyelitis

Osteomyelitis: is an infection of the bone. In this case the jawbone. If by some turn of events you have not yet been treated, see an Oraland Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMFS) right away.
This type of infection will not just go away and in extreme cases may lead to serious disfigurement or even death.
Please get treatment right away.

Osteomyelitis: If you had x-ray or chemical treatments for your oral cancer, there is a risk of bone compromise.  See an Endodontist to evaluate the necessity and efficacy of root canal treatment.  See an Oral Surgeon to evaluate integrity of your bone.  With your history evaluation by both of these specialists is warranted.

Osteomyelitis: You should discuss your symptoms with the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon actually treating you! If not confident with his/her answer, get a second opinion.

Have it evaluated.: Cultures would help in determining the appropriate antibiotics.  Debridement of infected wound and bone may be needed.  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be a good adjudicative treatment for a bone infection.

Bone Infection: You are dealing with two specialists who should reach out to each other to help solve the cause of this infection. If it is from the extracted tooth, then a simple antibiotic should clear things up. If after a course of antibiotics your issues remain, then it's probably a cracked tooth since antibiotics will not fix a cracked tooth. This is a simplified explanation, hard to diagnose sight unseen.

No infection: suspected. Need infection to get Osteomyelitis (spread of infection to bone) sepsis (infection that has spread to the blood stream) or a brain abscess.

MIGHT BE OK: Interestingly, the fifth metatarsal moves differently from the middle metatarsals. So, you may not have any residual problems. You may have a callus develop under the 4th metatarsal. Rx orthotic devices or shoes may help. I think little rehab is needed. You should still be able to hike, but use good footwear. Good luck!
