it has been two years since i had bunion surgery. why is my big toes still numb, lose my balance & have to wear socks year round, they are cold?

Multiple causes ...: What type of bunion surgery was performed?  During surgery, the nerve could have been inadvertently damaged causing the numbness.  Losing balance could be a result of the type of bunion surgery ... The first metatarsal is not bearing most of the weight as a result of the bone cut.  Would need more background information but you need to have someone review your history.

The best thing to: Do is let your surgeon know. 
If you have swelling in your foot best to elevate. If you don't then putting down would be okay. But, the numbness you are feeling may or may not be related to the surgery and your surgeon should be informed.

Maybe: Depends what your definition of recently is. More likely your symptoms will be permanent if you're greater than six months or certainly 12 from the surgery.

Podiatrist: Consult a podiatrist for diagnosis and treatment. I assume your footwear and running technique is not the problem. Possibilities include tendinitis, stress fracture, fasciitis or arch problems requiring orthotics.

Transfer metarsalgia: If the pain is under the 2nd met head (under ball of 2nd toe), this pain may come from overload of this bone. This can occur because bunion surgery often shortens the big toe none a little bit. If under 1st toe, may e some arthritic change. Best idea is to return to your doc for a check.

i've had bunion surgery and a chilectomy within the past 2 years on my right foot. before the chilectomy the bunion looked like it was returning. after the chilectomy it just looks worse. how is it coming back when so much of my bone is being cut off?

: Like any surgery if you do not get at the cause of the problem the problem will re occur. Without X-rays and More history cannot give you a more precise answer. I would seek a second and third opinion. Bring your X-rays prior to surgery with you. If the the first metatarsal continue to drift medially removing  the “ bump” alone will not resolve problem.

Depends: If the scar is thick than cortisone injection or topical steroid can be applied. If a nerve is caught in the scar than physical therapy or surgery maybe necessary.

If they hurt: Otherwise can leave them in.
