Contact dentist!: You have waited a long time and it seems unlikely that this is clearing up on its' own. Definitely call the dentist to describe the situation and ask him to correct whatever went wrong. Don't try to self diagnose, it will not help you in any way. I hope the dentist will discover the cause and make it right as soon as possible. This followup should be part of the procedure done. Best wishes!

saw dentist yesterday & was told my pain was from an abscess. its on my lower left side. gave me amox and we are waiting for approval from ins for a root canal. my face is swollen and numb between my lip and chin today. should i go back asap or wait?

Go Back ASAP: The pressure and toxins from the abscess are affecting the inferior alveolar nerve. That tooth needs to be opened and drained ASAP, insurance or no insurance. Emergencies cannot wait for ins approval, so get necessary treatment started now before the infection spreads or causes permanent damage.

From anesthsia?: If you are having these symptoms immediately after the procedure, they are probably due to the anesthetic used for the procedure. Depending on what local anesthetic was used, these symptoms may last from 2-8 hours. If this is occuring days after the procedure, you should return to your dentist to have this evaluated.

i had a root canal 10 years ago, and just got braces off 2 days ago. i'm due to get a crown but i'm experiencing facial numbness now and sinking tooth?

Ask your dentist: I am not aware of these symptoms associated with braces, it is best to talk to your dentist and endodontist before getting that crown. The sinking tooth? Can you elaborate, not very clear what you mean. Good luck.

Numbness: This is trauma to the nerve at time of injection.  this may last for quite sometime because the blood supply to nerves is minimal.  Hot compresses, massaging the area and the use of tens unit will speed up the recovery time.

Depends ...: It depends on the kind of local anesthetic used. Some can last up to 8 hours. But usually around 4 hours.

Numb lip: If the root canal was on an upper tooth, the numbness should be gone within a day!  if it was a lower tooth, once in awhile, the nerve can be bruised and it may take awhile for feeling to return!  let your dr know!

Root canal pain: You should not be having root canal pain continuing this long.  Call your orthodontist who did the root canal to ask to be reexamined as the pain persists.
