MTHFR mutations: MTHFR is the gene which produces methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase.  Over 50 known mutations in this gene cause reduced function of the enzyme.  The most common mutation causing homocystinuria is the C677T mutation, which among other problems increases the risk of stroke. I can't tell how many mutations your particular  test could detect, but you do not have the C677T mutation.

Sorry I: cannot offer more help than this:
The "story" is still "OUT" and this gene abnormality has now been blamed for just about EVERYTHING from early heart disease to frequent miscarriages!  I would be VERY CAUTIOUS about accepting ANY ADVICE particularly the INTERNET about this "condition"  If this is a MAJOR issue consult with a Board Certified GENETICIST! Folic acid is folate (folic acid): Folic acid and folate are the same compound. Follow your gynecologists and hematologists recommendations. Folate is often prescribed during pregnancy in the field of psychiatry and neurology when patients are on anticonvulsants. I too have the same mutation that you have and i take folate every day. I have also been advised to take vitamin b6 and vitamin b 12 because of this. Your child should also be tested for this mutation and anyone else in your family.Best wishes.

Controversial...: Some studies have shown an association between the  MTHFR gene mutation and recurrent miscarriages but this is controversial.  Aside from this possibility, it doesn't cause problems with pregnancy.  If you have this mutation, its a good idea to take folic acid, vitamin B-12 and Vitamen B-6.  Aspirin is also sometimes recommended for women for who have had recurrent miscarriages.  Best wishes!

Need activated folat: You need to take methyl tetrahydrofolate (folic acid) to bypass your genetic abnormality or take massive doses of folate (folic acid)--such as 3 grams. You can determine what is adequate by measuring your homocysteine level.

Dubious lab test: There are several different alleles at the MTHFR locus and most (not all) of us in the pathology community are skeptical about the value of determining them, even in this era of defensive cover-your-butt medicine. The majority of people who are tested are told they have a "bad mutation" and one lab then offers dubious "nutritional supplements." Talk to a real geneticist.

I am unaware of literature associating this with malabsorption of any substance

: If your father did not have the prothrombin gene mutation, he could not have transmitted it to you. Factor V Leiden mutation would not be transmitted as prothrombin gene mutation.
