i have had a permanent metal retainer behind my front two upper incisors for 30 years. is it safe to have an mri scan?

Accepted Answer

: Any oral appliance that is removeable should be taken out before an MRI to avoid detachment and heating. A permanent appliance if well cemented should be fine but some artifacts could show up in that area.

can someone with braces get an mri? what about a lower jaw permanent retainer?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Braces may cause distortion of the image in the area around them, but are generally MRI safe.  Let the MRI technologist know exactly what hardware you have inside you when you go for the scan.

Accepted Answer

It may: Depending on how much iron it has in it.  If it can be removed you should.

can i still have a brain and cervical spine mri with lingual bar retainers cemented on the back of my top 4 and bottom 6 teeth?

Accepted Answer

Ferromagnetic?: Your dentist must have information about the composition of the retainer.  If it is ferromagnetic, you probably will not be allowed to have MRI studies while the device is in.

please tell me, could a person with metals plates in their collarbone get an mri?

Accepted Answer

Yes: You can have an MRI without a problem.  If the MRI is looking around the area of the clavicle though, metal artifact will obscure the view and may make the MRI useless.  An MRI of any other part of the body will be fine, safe with no problems.

can i have mri  on leg with metal rods and pins?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Alert the technologist who will perform the exam that you have implanted metal. They will tailor the exam to best answer the clinical question. Most implanted metal for medical purposes is mr-compatible. Metal-artifact reduction sequences (mars) can be performed which vary by the site, but usually employ t1 and inversion recovery sequences to reduce metallic susceptibility artifact. Good luck!

do people wear headphones for head mri?  aren't there metal wires in headphones?

Headphones: If offered by the MRI tech, the headphones used are MRI compatable.

i can't have an mri because there is no record if my shunt contains metal. do i have any options? my shunt was implanted in 1977 .

Accepted Answer

Get type of shunt: Find out from where you got the shunt exactly the manufacturer and model of shunt you had implanted. Even though it was a long time ago, your surgeon or your hospital should have your records. They can tell you definitively if it is safe.

after an mri i realized  that i had an elastic hair tie in my hair that had a tiny piece of metal connecting the elastic together. i am so scared this mess up the imaging i traveled to a different state to get this special mri done. ?

Accepted Answer

They would have: known right away if there was a problem. Please be more vigilant and careful about metal on your person with  MRIs in the future. Messing up the images is the least of the problems that can potentially happen.  Severe personal injury and/or equipment damage could occur.

i had an mri of my neck yesterday and afterwards realized that the tech let me leave my jeans on with a metal button and zipper. was this potentially ?

Accepted Answer

No problem: Not dangerous.  What happens with the metal is that it can disturb the images but the tech probably looked at them when you were done and deemed them ok.  No worries!
