i am referred to an ent due to long term swollen lymph node.. ct done, bloods normal.. i have now found another one on other side of neck? worry?

Biopsy?: No need to worry yet. Just return and see if your ENT thinks a biopsy is indicated to rule out Hodgkin's lymphoma which can happen after mononucleosis sometimes. Fortunately, that is usually treatable, even curable. Please do make sure your hiv test is done and negative, though.

Possible tumor: Lymph nodes enlarge due to presence of infection, primary neoplasms of nodes or metastatic disease to nodes.  With an inflammatory process, over time the nodes will regress especially if inf. treated.  If nodes persist, feel firm, have enlarged somewhat, then bx indicated to rule out source of problem

Several things: These are symtoms that need to be evaluated thoroughly your physician.  He/she will be able to discuss his/her findings and suggest a plan.

Accepted Answer

No relationship: Facial or trigeminal neuralgia is due to irritation of the trigeminal nerve.  Enlarged achy lymph nodes are due to a local infection, typically at some site that drains to them. Much of the trigeminal nerve is inear the brain except for the peripheral portions leading up to the face.  It is extremely rare to have a "nerve" infection that results in lymphadenopathy. Most likely, they are unrelated.

Usually not: If it is not complete or near complete lymphadenectomy.  And even then it is not that common, unless it is followed by radiation therapy to the area.  A diagnostic biopsy or removal of an enlarged lymph node will have little to no effect.  However, once you develop lymphedema of arm or leg, it is a difficult condition to treat.

can reactive neck lymph nodes feel more oval than round? have a lymph node that i think feels about 2cm x 1cm in size (feels much longer than wide).

Yes: It can.  But best to see doctor and have this evaluated to be sure it is not something else.  If that big best to be evaluated.  Several other things besides enlarged lymph nodes can cause masses in the neck.  Hope this was helpful  Best of luck with this.  Dr. R

No: Swollen lymph glands can arise from mononucleosis, tumor spread, an inflammatory reaction to a virus or bactgerial infection.  The node if normal contains follicles filled with spaces producing large numbers of white blood cells to combat the existing problem.  Prodding may only cause painful symptoms if excessive but not enlargement.

a week ago i woke up with my armpit lymph node very swollen (golf ball sized), slightly painful, but moveable. it has gotten slightly smaller and is no longer painful, but it has stopped shrinking. do i need to see a doctor?

Doctor can examine: Lumps in the armpit of an adult can be due to ingrown hairs or blocked oil (sebaceous) glands. Occasionally, they are blocked pores, filling up with dead skin cells. If a lump hurts, it may be infected and would need antibiotics or be opened by a doctor, depending on how it looks. Lumps deeper in the armpit may be enlarged lymph nodes, which can be infection of some kind, or more rarely cancer.

Accepted Answer

I am concerned: Supraclavicular lymph node enlargement is always concerning for possible underlying malignancy.  Younger patients (under 40 years old) are more likely than not to prove not to have a malignant cause for the enlarged lymph nodes.

The prognosis is not as good over the age of 40. In this age group the biopsy is more likely to show a malignancy(cancer). SEEhttp://bit.ly/1EA25af
