Family practice: It is recommended to follow the liver enzyme panel which is a blood test. If any elevation of them occurs it needs to be stopped. It could cause cirrhosis.

Bad if untreated: An immuno-genetic disease, of which 90% are female, typically 40-60 years old. The disease affects asians, caucasians, jews, african. Family clustering is common. Early symptoms are fatigue, itching before jaundice, RUQ pain. Untreated pbc leads to progressive liver failure with its sequelae. Advanced age, liver/spleen enlargement, ascites, low albumin, fibrosis, cirrhosis predict worst prognosis.

No.: I'm not certain what specifically you mean by "excessive" and "longer periods" but, providing your overall diet is healthy and well balanced, it shouldn't cause liver cirrhosis or damage to any organ or system.  Garlic is used fairly extensively in many ethnic cuisines and, other than a garlic odor to breath and sweat, no adverse effects have been reported in human beings.

Many: When the liver starts to fail, it cannot detoxify substances being taken into the body (or converted from such substances) and substances the body already makes.  These "middle molecules, " like ammonia accumulate and can cause confusion. In addition, blood backs up into veins in the esophagus and can cause life-threatening bleeding. Fluid accumulates in legs and abdomen, and infections are common.

Multiple: Enlarged spleen, esophageal varices (distended veins in the esophagus that can bleed, sometimes profusely) jaundice (yellow skin), edema (localized swelling) or anasarca (whole body swelling) or ascites (belly distended with large amounts of fluid inside), confusion from build-up of ammonia, impotence, growth of breast tissue in men, bad breath, distended veins on the abdomen (caput medusa), more.

: If you are overweight, this could be fatty liver. A CT scan of your abdomen would be helpful to assess your liver to see if fatty liver is present. If it is, weight loss and avoidance of alcohol as well as meds that are liver-metabolized would be part of your treatment. Seeing a liver specialist would be helpful. Good luck!

Depends: it depends on your definition of decompensated cirrhosis, since cirrhosis itself is a de-compensated condition by definition. Liver function tests( blood draw), ultrasound, and specific types of scans( fibroscan, MRI, CT) can add to the picture.
