i have been diagnosed with a lipomatous hypertrophy of the interatrial cardiac septum. i also have several lipomas throughout my body. should i be concerned?

: If you have no other cardiac symptoms you should be fine, no treatment is required. However, it has been suggested that lipomatous hypertrophy of the interatrial septum is associated with the presence of coronary artery disease in proportion to the degree of atrial septal thickness. Take care!

Atrial septal aneury: Atrial septal aneurysm is seen sometimes on echo. Usually there are no hemodynamic consequences, we worry about thrombus formation but unless the rhythm is atrial fibrillation don't know that we should anticoagulate.

my latest cardiac mri said 'the interatrial septum is mildly aneurysmal and bulging to the right'. what does this mean doctor, and how is this treated? thank you?

: As per the description, if the atrial septum is "bulging to the right", it could relate to mitral valve stenosis, which would increase the left atrial ejection pressure, and cause mild aneurysmal "bulging".  See a cardiologist , who may order a cardiac ECHO to determine the cause.

in my echocardiogram in mid-may it said 'trivial regurgitation in mitral valve but no evidence of stenosis'. in the cardiac mri done at the end of june it said 'interatrial septum is mildly aneurysmal, bulging to the right'. are these connected?

: Yes, those findings in echo and heart MRI could be related. I wonder why you had these tests done and the reason why the heart MRI was ordered. However, trivial MR is usually clinically insignificant.

Ileocecal valve: ileocecal valve is the "gate" or sphincter between small and large intestines. ask your physician whether anything needs to be followed up for the enlargement

May need core biopsy: FNAC is often inadequate to make a proper diagnosis, especially if you suspect cancer. if you have a tumor, you should go and see a good surgeon who deals with cancer. He may do a core biopsy which gives more tissue than a FNAC. I am afraad you will need a repeat biopsy but seek a second opinion for finding out what you have wrong

Get MRI to be sure: MRI is better than CT to characterize soft tissue masses.        IV contrast would likely be used for lipoma analysis. These statements assume the patient is a candidate for MRI and contrast.
Lipomas are benign, but it is nice to almost completely exclude a rare liposarcoma--less than 3 in a million people diagnosed in a year. MRI along with a benign history and presentation does this.

Basal septum: The septum is the muscular part of heart that spits the left and right sides of the ventricles. Basal septal hypertrophy is associated with hypertension. This is opposed to thickening in the mid portion of the heart that is associated with Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Take care: That does not necessarily mean anything grave at present but that depends on how much the septum is hypertrophied compared to the other walls.  At any rate it should be followed regularly with echo probably every 12 months and your blood pressure should be kept in very good control at all times.

Hypertrophic Heart: Hypertrophy means the walls of ventricle are enlarged and may be encroaching on the inside chamber of the ventricle.  This can inhibit outflow of blood to the body, which can be serious.  There is medication which can help this, and sometimes a cardiac procedure may be necessary.  It is very important to maintain good follow up with your doctor for appropriate treatment.
