Yes: Root canal treatment primarily fails due to 1: residual bacterial infection of incompletely treated roots, 2: re-contamination of the rc filling from decay in leaking/failed dental work or 3: trauma. Osteomyelitis is a bone infection from many sources: teeth, blood, bone fractures, residual infection (involucrum), or others. Sometimes, the source is not known-even distant to site of infection.

i went to er last night with leg pain they said they thought i had infection in my leg... a friend said it could be osteomyelitis...my leg is swollen ?

Osteomyelitis: If you had x-ray or chemical treatments for your oral cancer, there is a risk of bone compromise.  See an Endodontist to evaluate the necessity and efficacy of root canal treatment.  See an Oral Surgeon to evaluate integrity of your bone.  With your history evaluation by both of these specialists is warranted.

Let me explain: Treatment for osteomyelitis is well documented, we start patient on special antibiotic and before that we take a sample and send to the lab to find what the best antibiotic we should use for microbe.

No infection: suspected. Need infection to get Osteomyelitis (spread of infection to bone) sepsis (infection that has spread to the blood stream) or a brain abscess.

Not necessarily: An MRI is a very sensitive test and even in a well treated infection responding well to antibiotics, marrow changes can be seen for even 6 months.  Because of this,  blood markers such as CRP is the more common way to follow infection response in the spine.  If any question, an infectious disease specialist can be helpful.

Have it evaluated.: Cultures would help in determining the appropriate antibiotics.  Debridement of infected wound and bone may be needed.  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be a good adjudicative treatment for a bone infection.

8 mnth old woke up screaming in pain not able to move leg due to pain. diagnosed with ear infection, ear infection cleared with abx but leg pain continued then diagnosed with osteomyelitis. how does osteomyelitis come on so fast? he wasn't sick prior?

: Osteomyelitis occurs after germs spread through the blood &amp; end up at the bone/joint. Because the ear infection is common &amp; bone infection rare, it may have occurred at the same time and been overlooked, or just not evident on exam. There is always the day before a patient develops their appendicitis, when they have no symptoms, the same here. The same germ can cause both.

Pain: The most common sign of bone infection (otherwise known as osteomyelitis) is localized pain.  If the infection spreads and enters the bloodstream, you can get the usual septic picture with fever, high heart rate, and possibly low blood pressure.

You probably can't : Bone infections can often be diagnosed with a combination of history taking, physical exam, x-rays and certain lab test.  There are no sure signs of diagnosing osteomyelitis just by looking at it.  Bone infections are serious medical problems, and require prompt diagnosis and treatment. I would recommend to my patients immediate medical evaluation.
