i get blood work done every few months and have had slowly rising platelet levels for over 3 years. i didn't even notice until this last test showed a 419 level. it's been in the high 300's for the last 3 years but this is the first time out of range?

High platelets : Your platelets are mildly elevated and there are many other situations in which they are elevated, aside from cancer. Your treating physician should be able to followup properly.

Any prior trauma? Surgery, spleen removal?

No.: There is probably a reason for your high platelets.  You should probably ask your doc.  Common causes are anemia and essential thrombocytosis.

Probably none: Occasionally low plts will be part of a nutritional deficiency, usually iron deficiency, but it should be obvious with other findings like anemia and small red cells.  Isolated low platelets with nothing else abnormal is not a deficiency that foods can correct.  There are many causes of low platelets, infections, medications, immune diseases to name a few. Work with your doctor to address cause.

Question confustion: Anemia, by definition, is ↓ed concentration of RBCs. Platelets are cell fragments from thrombocytes in the bone marrow, promote blood clots when activated. WBC (5 types infection fighting cells) concentrations influenced by a variety of issues, count can double quickly because (at any given time) about 1/2 are bound to the walls of blood vessels. Sounds like good help; better understanding needed.

Get a consult: High or low? In either case, if you're not satisfied with your physician's explanations, do whatever it takes to get a hematology consult -- especially if you've got easy bruising.

Thrombocytosis: The most common cause of an elevated platelet count is iron deficiency anemia. Some people are born with thrombocytosis. Other causes include chronic infection or inflammation, metastatic cancer, and essential thrombocythemia, a bone marrow disorder which causes excessive production of platelets. For the correct diagnosis and treatment, you will need to see a hematologist.

Fix the problem: What is the cause? That is the question you have to answer. If you have low iron -then your will need to fix the iron ; find out why iron is low. Once iron is normal- platelet will be normalized by itself. If you have infection, then antibiotic should be given for infection, then platelet will go down by itself. No special diet you should do to fix platelet. You need to fix the underlying problem.

: If 480 you would be bleeding to death.  Do you mean 480,000?

husband, 35, blood work showed low platelets at 109, low lymp percent at 10, & high monocytes. his dr dismissed this as viral. should we get 2nd opin?

Accepted Answer

He's fine: Just follow this. Reference ranges are set so that several percent of healthies fall a little bit outside on either end. With platelets at 109, he can have neurosurgery and not worry. Percentages of white cells are meaningless apart from the absolute values; unless these are way, way off or there are weird cells, forget about them if he feels well. Best wishes.
