i am having a transperineal prostate biopsy. the directions indicate that i should take a fleet enema the day before the biopsy. i live alone and it may be difficult for me to administer an enema to myself..can the biopsy take place without the enema?

: Yes, enema needs to be done to clear up the rectum because the ultrasound probe has to be placed in the rectum for guiding the biopsy needle even with transperineal approach.

good afternoon doctors. my urologist wants me to do a fleet enema before a prostate biopsy. i live alone and am worried that i may not do the enema correctly. is there an oral medication i can take similar to a fleet enema like i did for colonoscopy?

: Not really. A fleets is designed to empty the last segment of your large bowel so the debris in not in the way of your procedure. Oral medications are not dependable for this. They are slow to work and incomplete when/if they do. I would look for a demonstration video online if you need to get some pointers on doing it. The fleets kit has written instructions.

: The type of bowel preparation needed for the different procedures is that found by your treatment team to work best in a given situation. A Fleet Enema is quite effective for outlet level clean out. MiraLAX or Dulcolax would not be as effective in general and may take several days of use to be even partially helpful. Discuss this with your doc. If there are options they will know the best ones.

why do i need to give myself an enema before my prostate biopsy procedure?

Because...: The presence of fecal material inside the rectum will not just interfere sound transmission so to impair the imaging quality of  the prostate. But also make the rectum be more bacteria-rich environment so to increase chance of infecting the prostate.

So, an enema accomplishes these two goals; our body can defend and life can live on without a hitch.

had a prostate biopsy, blood in urine gone after week. had sex later, what seemed like brake fluid comes out, engine needs cleaning. what should i do?

Normal: This can be normal after a biopsy. Give it a bit more time. If you have a fever, call your doctor.

Accepted Answer

Depends on biopsy: depends on what is found.
If biopsy is totally negative, might be sampling error and they just missed abnormal area.
If it shows inflammation, you have your answer.
Sometimes a prostatic massage and culture will prove prostatitis.
How high is it?

: Stage is determined by the degree of involvement of the prostate e. g. one side , both sides etc, spred outside. Your Urologist will explain that to you depending on the sites positive.

1 or 2 days: There should not be excessive bleeding after a prostate biopsy. Should clear up after a couple of days. Call the urologist it bleeding is severe or persists.

i had a transrectal prostate biopsy 8 days ago. sometimes after sleep, when i urinate, bright red blood first comes out.  then clear urine.  cause?

Prostate biopsy: This is considered normal after needle biopsies of the prostate.  It will clear up with time.  Mention it to your urologist at follow up.

urine test showed a 6.7 psa level, should i accept the recommendation for a prostate biopsy?

Accepted Answer

Yes unless!: By and large have a biopsy, and hopefully urologist will take at least 12 cores (many don't). Definite have biopsy if your father had prostate cancer. However psa can be elevated with prostatitis or after a vigorous digital rectal examination, in which case wait a couple of weeks and repeat. Prostate cancer is usually very slow growing. Grows slower in older man.
