my 12yo son was dx'd with ida 6wks ago. he's on 114mg elemental fe. today his cbc levels changed only slightly (hgb 11.3 to 11.5, hct 33.7 to 33.8, rbc 4.17 to 4.18) iron 39 to 46. should his hgb/rbc increased more. is this still likely ida?

: Iron alone is not enough for the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia.  His total red blood count is only slightly low so your son may have thalasemia trait which cause mild anemia with low Hb and small red cells. If he truly has iron deficiency what is the cause of iron deficiency, not eating enough animal products and green leaves versus blood loss? Ferritin &amp; TIBC are required for the diagnosis.

since last 10 days my body temperature changes alot throughout the day morning 98 evening 99.6. cbc normal.
leukemia suspected?

Accepted Answer

No: That is a normal diurnal variation in temperature. And leukemia means that the white blood cells have gone wild and you have a normal cbc. No worries

is it likely for your cbc to be normal if your spleen is enlarged?

Accepted Answer

Depends : Some spleens  remove damaged red blood cells  e.g. Sickle cells or spherocytes. Some remove platelets.  Other conditions can cause enlarged spleens without the above and the CBC may be normal. Your doctor should be working on finding the exact cause.

will holding your breath for over a minute during your cbc change the results?

Accepted Answer

No.: Try it and see.  This will certainly influence some lab tests, but the CBC is just a measure of the number of cells in your blood none of which changes in any significant way over short spans of time or with changes in respiration.

: There are hundreds of different elements to what you stated. Sone can change in a matter of minutes, others take days to weeks. You may wish to specify the issue of interest.

this change... could it be leukaemia?

Accepted Answer

Not leukemia: This can occur entirely normally. If anything is wrong at all, it's probably an infection -- but if no fever or other symptoms, nothing to worry about. Leukemia would cause many more and more severe CBC abnormalities than this -- no worries there.

my cbc was 15.1 wbc and 12.00 mpv. last years wbc was 9.1 and mpv was 8.4 i have smoked for 9 years but the change concerns me. no meds, no infections

Why did you test?: Why did you get blood count test done? If you don‘t have any symptoms and you just have this test as a "routine", this is precisely the problem you get: worry about nothing. It is not recommended to just do a blood count test as part of check up when there is no problem. Smoking is not indication for the test. Ask your doctor what to do next, but I personally wouldn‘t worry about it. Quit smoking.

These seem okay: The question is, how do you feel? Labs like these often don't mean anything to a doctor without more information. A decline in white blood cells from 7 to 5 is considered physiologic. The other numbers are normal. At 29, an ESR of 34 is slightly elevated, non-specific & possibly do to a recent infection. If concerned or have symptoms, discuss with your doctor.

No: If still worried ask for "liver profile" in your tests.

do i really need biopsy for 2cmx0.7cm lymph node that hasn't changed in size in 7 weeks & is movable? cbc norm, all x-ray, u/s normal.

Get 2nd opinion: If you have no fever, night sweats, or weight loss, and you feel well, and it stays stable, get another physician's opinion before removing a lymph node that is probably your friend.
