Exercise, ice, heat: Gentle range of motion, stretching and walking or any low-impact cardiovascular exercise. Pain can be relieved  with over-the-counter medications like advil or aleve (naproxen). Ice for about 45 minutes will address inflammation and swelling, never apply ice to the skin, always over a towel or clothing. Follow this by heat for about 20 to 25 minutes to help soothe and relax tight muscles.

Ice, rest, NSAIDS: I agree you may have pulled a muscle.  Rest (if possible with a young child) , ice (20 minutes 3 x day), antiinflammatories and/or tylenol (acetaminophen).  If does not improve, go see your family physician.

X-ray: Sometimes these conditions result due to varies reasons, but from the dental health point: it could be because you grind or clench and as a result have onset of TMJ. it is best to visit a dentist and get a check up

i think i may have pulled a muscle in my neck/back - i have severe pain on the right side of my shoulder blade which feeds all the way up to my. i can not move, everything is stiff and pain and can't sleep. do i need to see a dr?

Absolutely: Severe symptoms have to be timely investigated and treated specifically when influencing mobility and sleep. Best will be to start with your doc who can further coordinate with specialist if needed.

Neck problems: Medical history, physical examination and radiographic studies would be used to determine if there was a disc injury.  Not all intervertebral disc problems require surgery. You are trying to reduce something that would require complex assessment into something much simpler.

Topical analgesics: Most common one is bengay cream or any other one has salicylate or other anti inflammatory medicine like diclofonate. Keep neck warm at all times.

PT and NSAIDs: Physical therapy in association with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (like ibuprofen) are a good way to alleviated the pain and stiffness of a neck muscle strain.  Osteopathic manipulation is also an option.  Make sure the treatment is coordinated by your physician - you don't want to take any medicine that may interact with other treatments you are receiving.

See a physician.: He probably  have a cervical  strain. He should consult a physician. These symptoms are caused due to muscle spasm. Your physician can prescribe some nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication and muscle relaxants  and or physical therapy which will help to alleviate the pain.

Probably not: If you strained muscle either by strenuous exercise or unusual activity or repetitive movements  Apply Ice and take NSAID like Ibuprofen 3/day.
Some of the Shoulder muscles ( e.g.Trapezius) are connected to the Cervical spine, one can experience pain in Shoulder, Neck and Upper back area.
 If this does not improve in 1 week or start getting numbness and weakness of the arm consult your doctor.

i have a, what feels like a muscle strain in the left back of my neck. this is not going away and i have had this issue for about two months now. what can i do to get over this? at one stage it felt like it was clicking but now it is just painful.

Neck pain: This may not be from any strain but may be a pinched nerve from an arthritic spur in a neck vertebra. A bulging intervertebral disc would most likely  cause more symptoms. If turning your head towards the pain increases it, a pinched nerve is likely. If turning the head away from the pain worsens it, it favors a muscular problem. A neck xray may show a bone spur. See MD as needed.
