Infection and yes: An infection, usually viral or bacterial can irritate and inflame your voice box (laryngitis).  Viruses are common and may need to be "worked out" over time with resting your voice, keeping your "fluids up" and using throat sprays or mild otc pain meds as needed to alleviate any pain, etc.

how can i treat what may be a throat infection or laryngitis?

Dr. can check throat: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Throat lozenges and acetaminophen can help temporarily decrease pain.

after a terrible case of laryngitis+bronchitis (treated w atb), my voice is still raspy, hoarse. improved a little, better in the morning but gets worse througout the day (talking). its been almost 3 weeks after infection cleared. is this normal?

: As long as the hoarseness has improved your voice should be normalized in time. Yes, I have seen cases which take more than three weeks to recover, especially in smokers or people who use their larynx a lot. At times, a short course of oral steroid may hasten the recovery. Good luck.

will penecillin and prednisone treat reocurring laryngitis? i've had laryngutis 5 times and went to the dr twice and each time was given those meds.

No: Laryngitis usually caused by post nasal drip. Requires time to heal and drainage to stop. In contrast, pharyngitis or tonsillitis may be caused by bacteria which could respond to penicillin and prednisone.  Typically penicillin reserved for proven group a beta hemolytic strep. Requires throat culture or quick strep test to prove.

: No, it is an antihistamine medication used for allergy, not an antibiotic or antiviral medication. For viral upper respiratory infection, Benadryl is usually seen as a component of many OTC medications because Benadryl has mild anti-inflammatory effect which can reduce the secretion in upper airway.

Laryngitis: Depends on the cause of the laryngitis and the severity of the problem.  There are many conditions that can cause a laryngitis some of which are more serious than others.  Laryngitis in a youngster can be very troubling as swelling and irritation can tend to close off the airway.  Severe cases need emergency care.  See your doctor if this condition is a problem for you.
