It does naturally: Most of these are a reaction to a cold or allergies which will trigger swelling of the Eustachian tube that drains natural mucus from the middle ear. As the issue passes the fluid will eventually drain when the tube opens back up. Yawning or chewing can sometimes open the tube. In rare cases an ENT will insert a tube(grommet) in the eardrum that ventilates the middle ear &amp; lets the fluid drain.

Several days to week: the oral antihistamines are good for this. benadryl (diphenhydramine) might be another option if you are currently taking claritin or allegra or vice versa

i have a dull eardrum and fluid  behind my ear caused by a cold and mucus build up few weeks ago. how do i get rid of fluid so ears will stop ringing?

Nasal decongestion: and antihistamine therapy. Use any generic 12 hr. nasal spray for no more than 3 days. Use nasal saline spray or gel every 3-4 hrs.( not applicable if you have hypertension).
Hot steam showers and inhale steam through your nose.
Lastly, use OTC antihistamine such as Zyrtec or Claritin.

recently had vertigo, took anti-vert for a few days and felt better so i stopped taking it. will it get rid of fluid in my ear if i take it again?

Accepted Answer

No: The Antivert (meclizine) is a vestibular (balance system/inner ear) suppressant.  It is only for dizziness/vertigo and shouldn't affect ear fluis one way or the other.

Decongestants: Fluid in the middle ear is more common in children but can happen sometime in adults.It is usually due to drainage problem in Eustachian tube and Decongestants oral or Steroid nasal drops will help clear it,
In children it does clears up in most cases and if persists and causing Hearing loss sometimes we put tubes in the drum to drain the fluid
Some will recommend Antihistamines if there is allerg

What type of fluid.: If the fluid is serous (clear), perhaps you have a serous otitis media, which may be caused by allergy; if this is the case, an antihistamine may help.  If the fluid is pus (opaque), an antibiotic should clear it up and usually drainage is not required. if it is blood, it may be from trauma; if bloody, this may need further work-up by your physician. Get it checked out; prob won't need surgery.

Patience please: He fluid may persist for weeks after the infection clears but should resolve without help.Avoiding airway irritants like smoke or fragrances can reduce the chance the eustachian tube will remain swollen & prevent fluid release.

See ENT doctor: Fluid in the middle ear without pain is the result of Eustachian tube blockage.  At 48 years of age, if you do not have any history of previous otologic disease, then if you are unhappy about the hearing loss, pressure or fullness that frequently accompanies this problem, I would recommend you see an ENT doctor for evaluation.  Steroids for 5 days could be tried and if not helpful, then ear tap.

See your doctor: You may have an ear infection or another reason to have your ear completely clogged, you should see your doctor about it.
