It does naturally: Most of these are a reaction to a cold or allergies which will trigger swelling of the Eustachian tube that drains natural mucus from the middle ear. As the issue passes the fluid will eventually drain when the tube opens back up. Yawning or chewing can sometimes open the tube. In rare cases an ENT will insert a tube(grommet) in the eardrum that ventilates the middle ear & lets the fluid drain.
