my adult son has strep & is allergic to penicillen. he was on a z-pack for 4 days & still had white patches and a horrible sore throat. they just prescribed clindimyacin. the dr said he's not contagious even though the zpack didnt work. is this true?

: If strep A is truly resistant to azithromycin, your son can still transmit the bacteria after 4 days of taking this antibiotic. I hope he is doing better with clindamycin.

about to finish my 3 day zithromax 500 for strep throat. no more pain, but still having white patches on tonsils... is this normal ? will it take time to disappear or does it mean antibiotic didnt work? thanks a lot

7-10 days: It can take 7-10 days for symptoms to clear entirely, including white patches. Even with a positive strep test, many or most symptoms like this are due to an underlying viral infection -- and no virus responds to azithromycin (Zithromax) or any other antibiotic. Return to your doctor if you still have symptoms after 10 days.

they gave me a dose of azithromycin wednesday, february 17 because my tonsils are red and swollen and they also gave me tylenol and motrin but i dont have strep it came back negative but i still have very high fever will the azithromycin work?

Yes: I would continue the above treatment plan as it well structured.  A fever is the normal body response mechanism to the virus.  
The antibiotic is to cover any possible infections.

my daughter throat is very red and swollen now she has a pus pocket in the back of her throat her strep test came back negative but she still running fever! will the azithromycin work? im also rotating tylenol and motrin! please anything will help?

Some thoughts: Some of the worst looking &amp; longest symptoms of a sore throat come from viruses like mono. When strep has been excluded as a cause, antibiotics are not necessary &amp; may expose the kid to its side effects. Fever by itself is a natural body response to illness, circulating blood &amp; immune factors faster to aid healing. Fever meds for comfort may be wise but concentration on hydration is worth more.

Very unlikely : Many bacterial and viral causes of pharyngitis in a 7 yo with fever and pus on her tonsils, sounds more like EB virus (mononucleosis) rather than bacterial infection.

Less thana week: Antibiotics aren't very effective at shortening the course of strep throat.  They're given mainly to prevent some uncommon complications, such as rheumatic fever or kidney complications.  The symptoms almost always go away within a week whether you take antibiotics or not.

is azithromycin (7day zpack) ever prescribed for strep?

Yes: Zithromax (Zpak, azithromycin) is usually effective against strep throat germs, so surely a doctor somewhere has prescribed a 7-day course for treating strep throat. The usual course of Zithromax for strep throat is 5 days, but taking another 2 days should not cause any problems.

: Yes, it's safe. Somehow many people have come to believe that alcohol doesn't mix with antibiotics or interfere's with antibiotic effectiveness. It's an urban myth. Don't get tanked, but a a few drinks is fine.

: You did not tell us what the reason antibiotic was changed, but yes, you can start the Z-pack today.
