for my gerd symptoms i found relief in fomotadine, not in prilosec.  despite the saying that prilosec is stronger . why is that ? thanks.

Gerd : Famotidine is a histamine blocker and it works faster than Prilosec which is a proton pump inhibitor which takes longer to work but its effect also lasts longer. Study earlier this year shows that that is some mortality advantage with famotidine compared to proton pump inhibitor. So keep taking what works for you in this case.

have occasional gerd symptoms- nausea, need to burp to get relief. how do i tell if i have too little or to much stomach acid?

Symptoms...: It is not about having too much or too little acid it is about the symptoms you are experiencing. If you are having significant acid reflux, heartburn, cough, abdominal bloating then it tells you there is significant acidity in your stomach. Change your diet habits and avoid fatty foods, sauces, caffeine, too much bread, mint, citric juices, spicy food.If not better after diet see your dr.

i have chronic gerd, copd, and a host of other silent reflux symptoms.  i'm having a fundoplasty in the next couple of months. the most bothersome current problem is sore throat & constant ear pressure/pain. suggestions for relief until surgery?

PPI: A proton pump inhibitor and reducing caffeine and spices are recommended. Add a probiotic daily and please see your PCP.

Great Question!: The length of therapy is debatable among the experts.  There are some other factors that come into play in regards to the presence of any highly abnormal cells on biopsy or not.  Some patients may wish to consider anti-reflux surgery as well.  Multiple options but i'm not sure anyone here can give you a straight answer on that one.

i am diagnosed with barrett's esophagus with no dysplasia. is it a good idea to stay on the prescribed ppis after i no longer have gerd symptoms?

Ask your doctor: You need to follow up with your gastroenterologist and ask him/ her about that. You have higher change to get esophageal cancer, so regular follow up with your gastroenterologist is very important and he/she will tell you staying on ppi is necessary or not even without symptoms of gerd.

Medication: There are some easy solutions to help with gerd.  If your friend is not on medication, they can try any over the counter meds to decrease acid.  Also, the 3 common causes of gerd are caffiene, alcohol and nicotine.  Try to eat early, and avoid coffee, alcohol and cigarettes. You could also elevate the head of the bed 4 inches. If nothing helps your friend, they should see a gastroenterologist.

It can be.: Belching  is a rather frequent symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease. If you are well treated for your reflux, you may notice that your belching improves. Good luck.

Hearburn: More common than shortness of breath *but* yes! gerd can trigger asthma-like trouble. Many other things can also make it hard for you to breathe so please talk with your doc. Hope you're feeling better soon.

i take dexliant 60mg at night for gerd. i have flair ups and was wondering if it was ok to take maalox for faster relief when the flair ups happen.

Maalox: Yes, you can take maalox along with dexilant (dexlansoprazole). However, if your gerd is not controlled on dexilant (dexlansoprazole), you need to talk to your doc about further work up and treatment.
