Hearburn: More common than shortness of breath *but* yes! gerd can trigger asthma-like trouble. Many other things can also make it hard for you to breathe so please talk with your doc. Hope you're feeling better soon.

A 26-year-old male asked:
How to cure gerd? The feeling of shortness of breath is really uneasy...

Dr. Jerome Zacks answered

Reflux: Gerd or reflux is commonly treated with an acid-reducing medication for 14 days, and avoidance of foods which reduce the lower esophageal sphincter tone (chocolate, caffeinated beverages) allowing acid to rise up the esophagus from the stomach. Also, one should stop smoking and raise the head of ones bed 4-6 inches to allow gravity to prevent the stomach acid from rising when one is in bed.

Can GERD cause shortness of breath? If so, how?

Dr. Christian Assad answered

Yes: GERD can cause the sensation of shortness of breath and also cause shortness of breath
1) Esophageal spasm due to irritation from gastric acid can give you this sensation
2) Severe Gerd could cause some reflux into airway predisposing for irritation and reactive airway
