The resultant post thrombotic status will weigh heavily on amount of pain one experiences, and this may be several weeks, several months, and  even a lifetime.

Help: Aspirin is a form of an anticoagulant that lessens the chance of a blood clot.  However, the most important thing you can do is make sure that you don't have a DVT in your leg.  Will likely need a venous doppler ultrasound.

: Deep Vein Thrombosis is a clot that forms in the deep veins of the leg. It is dangerous to have strenuous exercise because it can cause a piece of clot to break off that can then travel to the lungs causing a Pulmonary embolism, to the brain causing a stroke, or to the heart causing arrhythmia. It is vital that a person with a DVT not do any strenuous exercise until cleared to do so by their DR.

i took a flight last thursday to johannesburg from durban. since the flight the top of my left leg has been painful and my legs feel very heavy. should i be concerned? is there a risk of blood clots or deep vein thrombosis? i had covid-19 in july

Be concerned: Leg swelling or pain after sitting for a long  airplane or car trip is always a cause for concern. I would go to an ER to have yourself evaluated because you may need an ultrasound of your legs and most doctors don't have that available in their office. Good luck.

DVT: Likely would be calf pain, calf swelling, possibly redness, it is in the calf and not the ankle.

Not usually: dvt will usually have swelling and warm extremity. Sometimes varicose veins or venous insufficiency can lead to discoloration of the extremity. The temperature changes are unusual but possible with venous engorgement. If persistent then you should have an evaluation.

Requires treatment: Deep vein thrombosis carries the risk of pulmonary embolism (blood clot to the lung) or chronic post-thrombotic symdrome (swelling, pain) if not treated.  Depending on the size, length and duration of the clot treatment might include anticoagulant drugs or a catheter treatment to remove the clot.  Depending on the location of the DVT a filter might be placed to prevent passage to lungs.

Blood thinners: It depends, to some extent, on where the clot is. It is possible to have a deep vein thrombosis that is so far down the leg, is so small, and is in such a small vein that we might treat it with anti-inflammatory medicines and compression stockings. If the clot is in a larger vein and is bigger, then we treat those with blood thinners for a minimum of 3 months and use compression stockings too.

DVT: The DVT resulted in blockages to the blood flow in your entire venous system on the affected leg so that blood is unable to flow back towards the heart properly.  This is causing fluid to accumulate in the lower leg. Talk with your clinicians about proper measures to keep the swelling down.
