can u get hiv in the eyes or mouth? i had an experience with both, i got blood splashed in my eyes and mouth on accident i am so worried and scared of hiv?

Accepted Answer

: In theory this could happen, if the other person has HIV, but it never has:  in the 40+ years of the known worldwide HIV/AIDS epidemic, nobody is known to have been infected in this way. If it was a very large exposure (like blood all over your face in taking care of an accident or gunshot victim), see a doctor for advice. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

i was removing an iv cannula for a patient and the blood splashes on my eyebrow. i washed my eye after but i feel some of the blood got into my eye. can i contract hiv?

: If the patient has HIV, you are at risk. If you work at the hospital, your hospital can test the patient. If the patient has HIV, you should get post-exposure prophylaxis. Talk to the employee health folks at your hospital.

i went onsen yesterday. i got water splash into my eyes and ears from the guy showering behind me. could hiv transmit from shower water mixed with blood entered into eyes? do i need to take pep? i have worried too much about that. please reply?

: Zero risk. You can't get HIV from something like this. You do not even need testing and certainly not PEP. No ethical doctor or clinic would agree to give you a PEP prescription in this situation. You'll never get HIV until and unless you have unprotected sex or share drug injection equipment with an infected partner. Don't worry about it.

so i got a hiv positive blood on my sweatshirt (shoulder part) splashed on me and i accidently wiped my mouth and my eye with my same shoulder the blood got on can u get hiv ?

: HIV blood splashed on eyes ,nose and mouth areas has about 1 out a 1.000 chances of infection. Now if there any cuts, scrapes or broken skin the risk is much higher. The amount of blood and how sick the person is contributes to the risk .Alway wash area with clean water, salt water or saline in a steady stream.

Seems very unlikely: If there is no sore on the eye or eyelid,  i doubt blood diluted in water would have any concentration high enough for this to be a great risk. Keep in mind you probably can never say zero risk, but this one should be very very very unlikely.

Can't tell: Although this mode of transmission has been reported, it is quite rare.  It is also impossible to tell how much blood it make take since it depends on whether your eyes are already inflamed and the viral count in the f blood. If you are concerned, just get tested even though the risk is very low.

No: HIV transmission is not possible in above described scenario. A fight-or-flight response appears likely given circumstances.

DOUBTFUL: To get HIV there has to be transfer of blood somehow so I am not sure how your eyes would necessarily be involved. or your leg from a scratch. Try to calm yourself and not let some small amount of money or a disagreement rule your life.

Accepted Answer

Small, but possible: Hiv virus is generally not very transmissible.  However, if blood of an infected individual gets on a mucous membrane, like the eye surface, transmission is possible.  Depending on the viral load of the person who's blood it was (i.e. Are they being treated for hiv? If so lower viral load).  Make sure you get an HIV test in several weeks, and practice safe sex until then.
