i did my root canal surgery 6 years ago and still have the temporary caping only. will it do any harm? i left it like that because i got a sinus issue

Temporary: A Temporary Cap is just that, temporary.  After a very short period of time (months at most) the integrity of the crown and the seal to the tooth begins to deteriorate.  Leakage can cause decay of the root canal treated tooth and thereby possible loss of the tooth.  Leakage can result in sinus infection.  You should be evaluated by General Dentist, Endodontist, &amp; ENT.  This is serious.  Get help.

hello dr.  i had a root canal done on tuesday and some of the temp filling came out and i was exposed to some of the copalite varnish. will it harm me?

No: Will not harm you, but exposing the inside of the tooth to oral bacteria can harm the tooth.  Call your Dentist to schedule to reveal the tooth and to begin the restoration process.

24 weeks pregnant needing a root canal, will it harm the baby if i wait till after delivery?

Possibly: Needing a root canal usually means there is an infection or abcess that needs to be treated. You are talking about putting this off for 4 months, not 4 days.The infection has the potential to spread to your mouth/jaw and face, and that kind of spread of infection in your body could indeed be bad for your baby. It's ok to have a root canal with local anesthesia while pregnant- better for you & baby.

can tooth abcess cause premature labor? i have a tooth that needs a root canal but they won't do it until baby is born will it harm? i'm 28 weeks

Yes: Any serious infection could cause premature labor.  Antibiotics will often keep a dental abscess at bay until it can be definitively treated.  It is probably riskier to your baby/pregnancy to have anesthesia for a root canal than to treat the abscess with antibiotics and wait until after the baby is born.

sensitive teeth on top left. did xray on that side and cold test on those teeth affected. there is no infection but an old filling is on a nerve. i don't have insurance until march. is there really harm in waiting to do the root canal in my case?

: The downside is that the tooth may become infected and need treatment before March. If so, you'll need treatment sooner than later.

i'm wondering how long in time should it be from having a root canal done to having a metal post fitted and then a new crown fitted to the post?

Prognosis?: After root canal treatment (rct) is done, the final treatment depends on the likelihood of survival for a long-term. Generally, it is best to do all right away: the tooth must be sealed well from the root tip (done by doing rct) ; the top, which requires fill/crown etc. The tooth after rct may need to be monitored  sometimes. Since this depends on your condition, ask your doctor for specifics.

what should i do in the mean time for the toothache till i can get a root canal?

Medication: If you have swelling, you should be on an antibiotic,  for pain, it depends on the level of pain.  You can take over-the-counter ibuprophen or if something stronger is needed you can ask your dentist for a prescription for pain relief.

Depends: Much of the cost for retreatment depends on the particular tooth and region of the country you live in. Generally about 1.5 times the cost of an initial root canal.

How much time ?: Temporary restorations do not last more than a couple of weeks. Hard to know exactly what is occurring inside that tooth. Please see the dentist who is treating you. If you have a final restoration, it might be leaking.
