Medication: If you have swelling, you should be on an antibiotic, for pain, it depends on the level of pain. You can take over-the-counter ibuprophen or if something stronger is needed you can ask your dentist for a prescription for pain relief.

Anti inflammatories: Try advil (ibuprofen) !alleve etc. Sometimes am idol can help. Don't delay seeing your dentist though, even if the pain stops!

Toothache: If you need a root canal see a dentist or endodontist ASAP. OTC pain meds will help short term. Avoid chewing on that side, ice can help. A Dentist may prescribe antibiotics for an acute infection but this will not cure the problem. You will feel much better once the tooth is treated.
