Can tooth abcess cause premature labor? i have a tooth that needs a root canal but they won't do it until baby is born will it harm? i'm 28 weeks

Yes: Any serious infection could cause premature labor. Antibiotics will often keep a dental abscess at bay until it can be definitively treated. It is probably riskier to your baby/pregnancy to have anesthesia for a root canal than to treat the abscess with antibiotics and wait until after the baby is born.

Yes: But more info is needed... Why won't your dentist treat you? Because of your pregnancy? You are better off treating it now than taking the risk of infection and severe pain. Have your dentist refer you to an endodontic specialist and have him/her coordinate with your obgyn. Many times this can be completed in one visit. All the best..

Get 2nd opinion: In 40 years of dental practice & treating many pregnant patients, some of whom required rct, I have never had an obstetrician advise against emergency dental treatment including root canal therapy as long as local anesthetic without Epinephrine was used along with the use of proper lead shielding when taking x-rays. One always has to weigh potential risks of treatment vs. Non-treatment.

I'm an Orthodontist, so I don't do root canal treatment. But my understanding is that infections can cause, among other things, low weight babies and premature deliveries. Presence of infection is not good for you or your baby. Please see root canal specialist Endodontist who will coordinate w your Obstetrician. Wishing you a healthy baby.
